|

Hello Everyone,
I have stripped down the head from my spare 1977 motor in preparation to be sent to Eurorace for their "Big Valve" conversion.
The work was uneventful until I went to remove the last fuel injector insert (threaded plastic piece that screws into the head to hold the injector). I soaked all the inserts with liquid wrench, the first 3 came off with no problem, but the last one basically fell apart when I tried to loosen it. Some of it came out but most of it is stuck in the head, you can sort of see it in the first picture below.
Has this happened to anyone? What should I do? If I leave the remains in the head, is this something that a machine shop can easily clean out?
The good news is that the head is not warped (based on my own inspection, obviously I am not a pro) and appears to have no cracks. I've included a number of pictures in case anyone is interested.
Thanks in advance for any answers,
Chrenan

It's plastic....
Just get a wooden dowel, and hammer on the end to break the plastic up, and pull the chunks out. |

Is there a risk of damaging the threads on the head? _________________ 1987 951 - M193 Version for Japan |

It will not hurt unless you hit your thumb with the hammer. _________________ "Never let them see you sweat"

Crenan, yeah the same thing happened to me during my rebuild. Dig out what you can and the machine shop can remove the rest. If the threades get damaged, they need to be retapped. I had to retap mine, it's easy. You need a bottoming tap, the size is 24mm X 1.50 and just retap the holes. Any good machine shop will have that tap, and rechasing those threads is no problem. With all the work you are having done, to retap those holes shouldn't be any additional cost cause it's only a couple of minutes to do. The new tap cost me 24 dollars US. Also buy new inserts they only cost about 1 dollar each. You can put them in yourself after you get your head back, or take your new inserts to the machine shop and they will install them for you. _________________ I have a 78 n\a currently under restoration. |

Thanks for the info welder! Yes, I'll be installing new inserts, I've done that once before on my 1980 engine while it was in the car. Pretty easy job as long as you are careful to thread the inserts into the head correctly. _________________ 1987 951 - M193 Version for Japan |
