Hello all I am new to the board,My father had an 80 924 turbo sitting around for years and i just about had enough watching it doing nothing. he said it had a weak valve spring so i figured it would not be to hard to fix. Well i popped the hood open and found that it was home to some critters which did a nice job eating up the wires and making a mess. So i have been working on it slowly in my spare time. I just want to get it runnning and eventually plan on doing a complete rebuild when time and $$$ permits. I have done a fair amount of research but i dont see to many parts Oem or aftermarket for sale for the 924 turbo , for example brake upgrade kits intercoolers, body parts etc. Any places that i should be looking??? any pointers on things i should be looking for while I have the top half of the engine apart??

Welcome.

I suggest that you approach this project, and take little bites starting with getting the car running properly. You are about to find that good parts are not cheap.

If you have a weak or broken valve spring, the spring can be repalaced without removing the head. All you need is a decent air conpressor and a fitting to feed the air into the sparkplug hole to hold the valves in place while you remove the keep to replace the spring.

But first of all, how does your father know that the engine has a weak valve spring? Before you jump into the engine and pull the head off, I suggest that you buy the factory service manual (more expensive than the readily available Haynes manaul which is only good for some roardside emergency repairs). Then you can go through the manual, learn how the enigne is supposed to work, and do your own diagnostic work to make sure that the problem is fixed correctly the first time, wasting as little money is possible on unnecessary repairs or parts.

I suggest sticking with Genuine German made replacement parts, even for filters (Mahle, Mann, Bosch, Purolator (the German made ones, not the US made or other Foreign made). Use a good quality motor oil (I use Valvoline products myself). Get a copy of Excellence magazine to get a list of authorized Porsche Dealers that sell at a discount who will take phone orders (toll free phone numbers), check with Porsche Dealers before buying parts from the aftermarket suppliers, many prices are competitive (some are lower some are higher). Only Genuine Porsche Parts come with a 2-year unlimited mileage warranty.

The 1980 924T (931) came standard with front discs and rear drums. The easiest cheapest upgrade would be to the optional four wheel disc brakes from a 924/831 or early 944 (bolt-on), which has the added advantage of eliminating the month rear drum brake shoe adjustment maintenance that you are required to do if you got the rear drum brakes, and you will be able to choose from any of the wheels sold from other more expensive Porsche models 911, 928, 944, 951, 968.
