You need an alignment. _________________ MJ

At that speed you should stop drinking. You will spill your booze.
wheel alignment or wheel balancing or broken/missing bushing. _________________ "Never let them see you sweat"

Thanks guys, your right. while jacked up I swapped the wheel for the spare cos I noticed a bulge on the tyre. I doubt it's been balenced.
It's also been pointed out to me that to correctly put the wheel on, there should be a mark on the wheel stud onto which you place the wheel hole nearest to the value, I'll check tomorrow. _________________ meteor silver 1981 924 lux. -UK |

The bulge in the tyre could be a snapped steel belt. It's happened to me before. At speed, it produces symptoms very similar to unbalanced wheels/tyres but it tends to be a little more severe. A good way to test is to drive very slowly (say, 10km/h or 6mph) and see if there's a perceptible tug on the steering wheel. If that's the case, my bet would be a busted steel belt. It's likely you will need to replace the tyre. Balancing the tyre may reduce the vibration but it probably won't eliminate it. _________________ '80 924 Turbo |

there wasn't a problem when the tyre with the bulge was fitted, only now with the new spare. It's not a huge bulge, just bigger than a coin but can be dangerous & cause a blowout so i swapped it. _________________ meteor silver 1981 924 lux. -UK |

the faster you drive the more you should spend on an alignment.
The usual $10 Kmart "alignment" guarantees that your wheels are generally pointing in the same direction and will probably be OK up to 55mph/90kph before the wheel is ripped out of your hands.
If you go faster spend more at somewhere you can take the car back to if you're not satisfied. _________________ 1979 924 (Gone to a better place)

here in the uk i'v never seen anywhere that does cheap wheel alignment. it's generally about £20, but i guess a big garage is likely to have better equipment than an independant one. _________________ meteor silver 1981 924 lux. -UK |
