Every time I come across a picture of these I think it would be great to put on my Porsche. Original decals are still available it seems but at a staggering cost of 135 Euros = 150 $ a side. The imitation decals are much cheaper but do not have the correct hatched appearance which adds the necessary subtleness to 1 meter 'porsche' on each side of the car. My plan is now to order the imitation non hatched decals and spend some time cutting the hatching in by hand....
However, I still need ONE CLEAR PICTURE of the hatched pattern,
so anybody please ?? |

A sign shop should be able to do it if you can provide the "PORSCHE" in the correct typeface/font. They can scan the lettering, then use the computer software to create the hatching. Printed on clear stock allows the color of the car to come through. This is what I did for the '79 "924 Turbo" decal which was a 1-year run and NLA. The problem is that the shop will charge a very steep set-up fee for the first printing.
There is a Board member (Sparky, http://www.porschedecals.com) in the sign/decal business who carries a full line of Porsche decals, but I don't know if the side decals are the style you are looking for, or if they have the minute hatching or not. _________________ '79 Eurospec 931 |

Thanks, but I looked at www.porschedecals.com and neither of the two types of side decals corresponds to the original design as featured in PET and the two books by Peter Morgan, IMHO. There are two companies that sell the side decals in the UK. Both have the correct design but for the hatching. I have send them an email to inquire if the decals hat the hatched effect, but the decals where just 'full'. Maybe it is more difficult to reproduce these hatched decals ?? But still, given the correct hatching layout it must be possible to cut out little pieces out of the 'ful' imitation decals, dont you think?? I dont like the 'full' decals, just a tiny bit to much . |

Maybe just buy the original for one side, and have it duplicated someplace? _________________ [This Space For Rent] |

Yes I would really like that.
I have found some pictures on the web of the ´full´decals,
however the books I have show the hatched decals from to large
a distance to be able to identify the correct hatching.
I was hoping that someone on this forum could supply a good close up picture of the hatching.
I thought I read that 5150 had the original decals on his car ?? |

Ok, I'm lost. Which decal are you talking about and what does hatching mean? Do you refer to the decal at the below of the doors? And they have some cross-hatching pattern?

It is a decal, quite large that says 'porsche' and runs between forward and rear wheel arch a few centimeters under the black strip on the side of the car and the door.
The fonts are of a type similar to the standard porsche fonts, but to add some subtleness to the decal the fonts are not filled but consist of diagonal black stripes , so the colour of the car shines through. On a red car you can read the word 'porsche', but due to the hatching ( the fact that the fonts are built up from the diagonal strips) the word is not screaming out . It is partno 91155931906
My parents keep telling me that adding porsche decals will increase aggresion towards the car and will increase the chance of it being damaged by vandals, mmm I dont want to know |

I don't know if this pic is detailed enough, but maybe it's of use to you?
I have a higher resolution one around somewhere if you want it..
I no longer have a digital camera so can't take any more shots unfortunately.
oh, and the part of the hatching on the rear quarter is actually painted onto the car (the sticker must have peeled off at some point) but the rest is original as far as I can tell - it's definitely a sticker anyway.
if you like I can give you some measurements to give you the scale..

I agree with Joe on your car Kye, that really looks the business!
( To quote Mark Evans).
I would really like to have the hi-res picture, maybe you can email it to me ?
If you could measure the heigth and width of the fonts, the distance between the
top of the decal and the underside of the black trim on the door that would be a real help.
I saw the full ones on
http://www.prestigeparts.co.uk/924exterior.htm
Judging from that they put their imitation decal to far aft, because on your car the letter P just touches the trailing edge of the door.
The full ones on
http://www.porscheshop.co.uk/acatalog/porsche_924_badges_decals.html
seem to match your cars decals, but for the hatching
Thanks in advance.

thanks joe and duncan!
the higher res one isn't that much better, but it's here:
http://www.kyelight.net/pics/my924/side.jpg
here's my dodgy drawing of the details:
the letters were all 25mm wide on their straight vertical strokes, but were varying thicknesses on their horizontal strokes (the S for example is thinner in the middle)
it's 145mm from top of decal to the top of the black strip underneath the panels, and the decal is approx 78mm tall.
if you're going to make these things up from scratch I can measure each stroke of each letter for you to get correct thicknesses, and then it's just the radius of each corner and you're there!.. _________________ it's funny, but when they said "Anything is Possible", that's exactly what they meant....

and yes, the porscheshop.co.uk pic has got the decal in the same place as mine, with the prestige parts people putting it on differently.. and is theirs solid colour? yuk! the lines is a much nicer effect I think.. _________________ it's funny, but when they said "Anything is Possible", that's exactly what they meant.... |
