|
|
So, my steering wheel is brown, yet I want the entire interior black. Is it possible to dye my steering wheel? And if yes, then what and how do I go about it? _________________ Working on cars is restful for they have neither conflict nor emotion.

You could always get a black steering wheel for a replacement. They come up on Ebay quite a bit, like this one:
http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=7941163097
Or, you can buy a recover kit from Paragon Products, a trusted supplier for lots of members here, although I've never ordered from them:

As for dying, I'm not sure how good the results would be, especialy given the leather would be in constant contact with your hands. The last thing you want is to dye your hands black. _________________ 1987 951 - M193 Version for Japan |

| O, and for dying somthing that old, I wouldn't think the thread would hold up. I think dying it would weaken the material too. Besides, the sun and your hands may wear it down over time. I'm just guessing here. Where in Alta do you live? I was born in Edmonton, and I'm wondering how the city is holding up. |

if you figure out a good way to dye vinyl/leather for this application please post it..im sure it can be done, its just a matter of finding the right product and method to do so..
another alternative is a "wheelskin" type steering wheel cover, very nice and look factory, or can be bought in two tone as well for a more sporty appearance..less than the price of a hub alone.. _________________ Eric

I had good results dyeing a pair of shoes a few years back, I bought them because I really like the shoe, but it didn't come in black. I went down to my shoe repair guy and asked him what could be done to dye them. He advised me to use Dye Preparer from Lincoln Leather products and their black dye. To this day the shoes look great. I wear them at least once a week. The dye prep cleans the leather and opens up the pores to accept dye.
My brother used this method to dye some leather seats with good results as well.

Ok, I stand corrected, I guess it could work. Do I still get credit for my very tidy and informative post? |

If you're gonna mess around with the steering wheel, take that clunky 15 incher off and replace it with a D-shaped GT style 13.5 incher (that would be approx. 34 cm for those of you north of the border ) Makes it easier to get in and out, not to mention, sticking your head under the dash to work on wiring _________________ erstwhile owner of just about every 924 variant ever made |

if I use any aftermarket steering wheel, I would go MOMO, those grant units are not my favorite looking units. _________________ 3 928s, |

To address the original question...go to http://www.worlduph.com and get a can of SEM leather/vinyl prep and a can of SEM Landau Black dye and go for it. I have done complete dashes this way and it looked awesome. _________________ MJ

I agree, a $350 dollar kit could look better, but I didn't want the wheel to stick out too much. Vince has one still, that is always an idea. |

Tell me the last time you spent $350 on your 924 for one single cosmetic upgrade...anyone answer that one for me?
Not even for a completely new carpet kit and that does a hell of a lot more for your car than a steering wheel.
If you go aftermarket I say go Grant and get it done for less than half the cost, but not one those pictured. _________________ MJ

I have a brand new MOMO Corsa 350 mm wheel I bought for 260 plus freight for my track car. I thought it would be easier to get into the race seat with a smaller wheel. Yes, I have the wide sticky wheels and the MOMO wheel needs more effort than is comfortable to drive around town. Never used $160.
As for the dye all leather seats are painted. Use Surflex about 25 dollars and you can do the two seats and the steering wheel. It comes in colors and really is great. I did my seats 3 years ago and they look new.
Try Carcareonline for the product.
ON the seats I put it on with a rag. A brush leaves lines. _________________ "Never let them see you sweat"

I was talking about buying the MOMO wheel I like the best with thadaptor. I was comparing prices against Grant wheels. As for spending money on a cosmetic upgrade I will spend $1000 or more in the spring/ summer. |
