|
|
I have been fortunate enough to have personally visited with a few of the board members and got to check out their garages and so far each has had RC cars. Not just one either, they had several, with a little garage area for them.
Oddly enough it was actually a recent post in this section that prompted me to ask. Someone likened RC's to driftng and it made me think. I just need to know how many of the 1500 some odd we have here share this hobby?
I personally have never had an RC worthy of space in my garage. The basic $5 ones (some with the cheesy cord) but never a anything remotely cool.
So confess, how many cut their teeth on playing race car driver before they could afford their 924 play toy? _________________ MJ

Although I've never owned (proper) R/C cars myself, I've owed many R/C planes. Much more fun than cars, IMHO.
But the thing that got me into Porsches was a set of R/C cars that my parents bought me for Christmas when I was about eight years old. One was an RX-7 and the other was a 935 in Martini colours. That 935 was the most awesome thing I'd ever seen! When I found out they were real cars, I wanted to know everything about it! The love affair began...
A mate I used to share a house with had a really top-of-the-line gas R/C car... had, like, a titanium chassis and chain-driven 4WD and adjustable double-wishbone, coil over suspension, etc...
We used to have fun racing it around the local streets but it made a hell of a lot of noise! And it was a bloody temperamental thing; wouldn't start when it was hot, wouldn't start when it was cold, it'd get gummed up after sitting for a couple of months and wouldn't start and so on and so on...
I bought my little brother a half-decent electric R/C car (much better than gas!) for his birthday last year. It's 4WD, a rally WRX. One of those kits that you bolt together. Pretty impressive for a fairly cheap R/C car (it only cost a few hundred bucks). Runs for about 15mins on a charge but with two battery packs and a quick charger, you can basically run it for as long as you like.
Good fun but I prefer the planes _________________ '80 924 Turbo |

| I have an Audi Quattro that I bought about 20 years ago that I grafted a rechargeable 9.6v makita drill battery into that really ripped. Haven't had it out of the box for quite a few years. Thanks for the reminder. I should pull it out on of these days and run it around my driveway. |

I used to own some when I was a kid the crappy kind, but I would rather sink my money into my car now instead of a RC _________________ 3 928s, |

I was really into them for a good year or so. Not so much anymore as i relized how friggin expensive the hobby can get too be. Im just in the stage where im still into them, but refuse to spend anymore money on it. I had a Traxxas E-Maxx truck, but recently sold it. Still have a HPI RS4-3 nitro touring car and a very optioned out Assoicated TC3 with a brushless motor setup. Its faster than my nitro car! _________________ 1987 Zermatt Silver Porsche 924S <-- Sold in Nov. '04

I got a Duratrax Evader Elctric and an older Traxxa electric and a Nikko Porsche 959 electric. I don't get to play with them much with the weather lately, but I enjoy them, A Nitro car is on my list next. _________________ Life is to short to be looking for something? |

I've got an old Tamiya Boomerang 4wd thing that I've had forever... it's pretty well beat up now, but it still works... _________________ Mars Red '78 Euro 924 n/a

I have a Tamiya kit of a Ford Focus WRC (World Rally Car). The scale is 1:24, assembled it myself from hundreds of bits, even the four wheel drive system.
Powered by an electric motor and currently on slicks, absolutely fantastic for four wheel drifts on marble surfaces.... Very fast too!!

My 12 year old son is into rc vehicles, so I am pulled in too! He has an Associated TC3 awd sedan, a Slo-V airplane, and soon an E-Max dual motor 4wd vehicle. He races the TC3 and I am his pit crew. He has done quite well for his experience level. As someone mentioned earlier, it can be quite expensive so he has mowed many lawns, shoveled a lot of sidewalks, and taken care of numerous pets when neighbors are on vacation to pay for this money pit, I mean hobby. I have chipped in a little along the way too.
The TC3 is truly like a miniature car. It has many of the same parts, especially in the suspension, as a fairly sophisticated full size race car. We have upgraded the coil springs, put in different shock oils, added sway bars, changed the gearing, upgraded the tires (about $40 a set), changed many parts to titanium or annodized aluminum (to save a gram or two), set up the front and rear alignment, tweaked the ride height, upgraded the motor, built balanced battery packs, and fiddled with numerous other maintenance items. And the learning curve goes on.
It is a fun thing to do together, though, and I wouldn't trade that for anything!

Nitro powered snowmobile or kyosho snow blizzard is my next purchase..
Its fun having something else to tinker around with besides real cars all day long! |
