| Those who installed 6x9s in the rear, how simple was it to install them and were there any modifications needed? What type of 6x9s did yall use?I'm thinking about dropping 6x9s straight into the factory hole. Just hope that I have enough space front and back. |

Errr... I done half of this, one side finished and the other is still waiting.
I had a pair of old Zachry 6x9s and tried to install them in my 924. The backspacing and space around the 4x6 factory hole wasn't really enough so I had to make adapters to make the speaker fit in place. Looks like this:

And no, there wasn't enough space from the speaker to the quarter panel either so the panels will have to be modified...
Note: In my 924 the PO had tried to install 5 1/4 inch speakers in the 4x6 inch hole... Simply by cutting out a bit of body metal... The hole looked like this:

And the quarter panels is in really bad shape so I simply cut them and tried to make them fit over the speaker. Really ugly work with a knife and black duct tape... Heck, it's just a track day car...

My buddy and I put 2 pairs of Alpine 6x9s in my 87 S. After doing the rear speakers...if I ever had to do it again I'd just take it to a stereo shop and let them deal with it. It was a HUGE pain in the butt. Some say that you can pop the side rear window out easily, but I wasn't willing to try it and risk smashing the window into 4,000,000 pieces.

So do 6x9 fit without modification? I already changed them once with no problem _________________ 1987 924S Guards Red

Negative. Only 4x6 will fit without modification. If you changed them one time already, you should have seen the spacing and cut-out limitiations... The sheet metal supporting the rear quarter panel speakers has adequate "excess" to cut your own holes, but it's labor intensive. You may have depth clearance problems to fit any 6x9 behind the OEM fascia. _________________ '79 Eurospec 931 |

The stereo shop wil probably have to smash your rear windows too - at least they did mine.
I only know because I found a tiny particle of glass months later.
They did a really good tidy up job and thought that what I didn't know, I couldn't grieve over.
Thinking back they were very keen that I should "go and get some lunch and not come back for 2 hours." |

yeah, I found a ton of glass behind the panel, but it might have been from a break in or something _________________ 1987 924S Guards Red
