|
|
I was thinking about getting a new or used late model Tiburon with V-6. After calculating the total price payed out for five years, and the total of 5 years worth of insurance payments, I came out to $36,900. Figure $27,300 for five years worth of payments, and average insurance price of $160/mo, and that is $615/mo for five years. That does not include maintenance or gas. That blows me away. I think I will keep my 924 and Audi, and go buy a 951 or 944S in a few months. I can't imagine buying a $40,000 4x4 truck, and paying for it for a few years. I will never finance a car now. Pay with straight cash only! The joys of simple math. _________________ Shut up fool, those are mine. |

Yeah, buying an average brand new car is rarely worth it, IMHO, unless your employer/business is paying for some or all of it. Especially if it's just going to be the runabout/shopping cart.
Best to let 'em depreciate for 1-3 years then pick one up, drive it and sell it again within a year or two so you don't lose massive amounts of cash.
Or stick to 25-year-old Porsches! _________________ '80 924 Turbo |

My 2 year old new Honda Civic cost me 12,000 and gets 38-41 hwy gas mileage. Good enough for me. Run it down to Fl. once a month without a hiccup. _________________ "Never let them see you sweat"

Yeah, I think right now Hondas are the best buy. Great mileage, and they are about as bullet proof as it gets. Theres a reason all indy cars are now honda powered

I just ordered some nitrous for the 924. I decided why suffer paying monthly payments when I can have more fun with my money. I guess my N/A 924 can take a wet 50 shot. If not, I will have parts available in a few weeks. _________________ Shut up fool, those are mine. |

| Edmunds Inside Line had an article a while ago. German cars are best value, Japanese in the middle, and US the worst. In consideration was taken resale value, insurance, maintenance, etc. The period over which they calculated it was 5 years. The only example I remember is the Cobalt SS. It is US $25 000 brand new, and after five years you will have put + USD $35 000 into it. It was amazing to see how much more cheap cars actually cost you in the long run. |

I wish I had access to my old motoring magazines... I remember seeing a story stating that the Boxster was one of the cheapest cars in world considering total cost of ownership. _________________ '80 924 Turbo |

hey Khal,
youre right. The Boxter is choosen for the car that has the best resale value overall. After 5 years it is still worth 80 % off the new price !!
Not to think about what it will be worth in 25 Years !?

every car i think i might like , ends up being 36k , even the "cheap" ones, after setting it up with a few decent options..just for fun i used an "build your (insert car name here)" on a yaris, still came out to over 18k... Ill stick to buying gently used cars that have already suffered the depreciation and can be got for half their new price after two or three years but still have pretty low mileage and avoid the huge monthly payments.. _________________ Eric

| 924Guy, they're right. You should look into a Boxster. Here they start at $25K Cdn, and they're only a couple of years old. |

Boxsters are a lot of fun.
A great deal out there right now is a used Crossfire, they are selling very cheap when compared to their new price. _________________ White 87 924S "Ghost"

Paul,
Do you like those cross fires? I think they are just....ugh. I dont know. I think they somewhat ripped of the 911's shape, and put some disproportionate wheels on it.

I call them "Miss fires"!
For the money they are probably the best deal out there on a fast 2 or 3 year old sports car. _________________ White 87 924S "Ghost"

Haha, good name for them. I think that they are actually based on a mercedes chassis or something like that.
I wish american automakers would just try to be origional instead of ripping other peoples good ideas. I sort of call some of the cruddy cars I see "gimmick" cars, cause they have stupid chinsey features, like the crossfire's giant rims, and lifting spoiler.
