One person asked, and I thought perhaps others migt be interested in the answer as well, about my shift light setup (in the racecar):
http://vaughanscott.com/construction.htm#MYCHRON3
I am running the AIM MyChron3 Gold XG Auto Data acquisition system with dash display. It tracks speed, RPM, lap times, lateral G's, calculates gear, and will also monitor up to 4 other input signals; we typically run longitudinal G's, yaw rate, oil pressure and water temp (but can switch them out at will). For example, for dyno tuning runs, we'll likely run all 4 EGT's at once to view cylinder-to-cylinder mixture differences.
But it's very expensive, designed for full-on racecars; they start at $350, and mine costs over $900.
If you're just simply looking to add some gauges and shift lights, buy the VDO gauges, and a set of inexpensive shift lights. DKS Electronics makes some nice little programmable ones; their website's flaky at the moment, but I've sent them an email and they're at:
http://www.dkselectronics.com/
$120-145 is what their units cost.
Here's the cached version of their main page:

To jump past the non-functional first page, here's the photos of their shift lights:

hmmm, seems to me this should be pretty easy to makle a simple version, using variable resistors or adjustable pots... assuming the tach feed wire increases voltage as the rpms go up.. but as the old saying goes.. "sure you can make one yourself..the question is "Will you??" " _________________ Eric
