|
|
Can someone please clarify what the different types of oil guages are for the 924/944? I've seen at least three variants, as follows:
vdo guage that says "BAR" at the top, and goes from 0-10
vdo guage that says "KP-CM2" at the top, and goes from 0-10
vdo guage that goes from 0-5
I recently picked up an entire center console complete with guages, but the original guage (which I wanted to replace due to a broken lens) goes from 0-10, the replacement goes from 0-5. Need to know if I should get the "right" guage, and if so, what to specify when I look for it...in other words, are the "BAR" and "KP-CM2" variants interchangeable???
Thx |

Hi!
I beleive that you can swap the lenses between the gagues. I did that with my clock, but i am not sure if you can do it with the rest of the gauges.
I think that the replacement gauge should work. It will receive the same readings, but it will show you the reading from 0 to 5. Just like a multimeter. But i am really not sure.
If i am not mistaken, i think that KP/CM2 means Kilo Pascal per CM2, and BAR is the normal pressure that i most use in the sanitary world.
So i think that they are the same:
1 KPa = 0.01 BAR
1 KP/CM2= 1 BAR
Guys, Please Correct if i am mistaken
Good Luck

The lenses on the two guages I have would be difficult to remove without destroying the housing.
I can't start the car right now because I'm waiting for a couple of parts that won't arrive until next week. What has me concerned about the 0-5 guage is that when I turn the key to the on position, it pegs the guage all the way to five. I don't remember the old guage moving at all until the engine was actually running, but of course, I wasn't paying attention before. It will be interesting to see what happens when the car is actually running. _________________ erstwhile owner of just about every 924 variant ever made |

Actually, the housing can be removed with a small screw driver and some patience.
The 5 bar gauge came on the early 944 and the '86-88 924S. I'm not certain they use the same sender as the earlier gauges, since the motors are completley different from yours. |

If the gauge pegs, that means that there's a short to ground in the wire that goes to the sender.
kp/cm^2 is kilograms force (sometimes called kilopounds, or kp, now usually labeled kgf) per square cm... kPa (kiloPascals) is already a measure of pressure, so pressure per unit area makes no sense. Pressure is a measure of force per unit area.
Conversions:
1 kfg/cm^2 - 0.98bar
1 bar = 14.5psi
1 bar = 100 kPa
HTH... you should work though the wiring, find out where the wire is grounding. Probably broken insulation somewhere. The oil pressure sender is at the back of the head. Sounds like your gauge is fine, though. _________________ Vaughan Scott
