Hello,

Can anyone help !! Recently the lights have just stopped working on my Porsche 924 (1983 UK). When i flick the switch once the paking lights come on as usual and when i flick the switch again the lights pop up,but theres no light !! Although once the lights are up and i use the flash with the stalk the bulbs light up,so the fillaments are fine. I cant remember when this exactly happened i just recall driving home at night after work hoping there were no over zealous coppers about !!

I've checked all the fuses and relays,everything seems fine,no battery acid leak,exceptionally clean box ! Also all the wires are intact,no sign of scorching. I just cant figure it out ? Unless the switch as just had it ! May have to get in an expensive Auto - Electrician to sort it out - ANY SUGGESTIONS !!

I'm new to 924 ownership and expected some initial problems,but this ones a real pain,cant use the damn car once it get dark !! whicjh is earlier and earlier as winter steps in !!

Did you remove the fuses and check them? Some times the ends (plastic) melts and the fuse looks ok (metal) part but it no longer makes contact.

Also check the power at the fuse when you put the lights on. If there is no power then check the power at the switch. If there is power there then check at the stocks to see if there is power.

If there is no power in between certain connections... then you need to replace one of the components... or jump a wire from one to the other.

On my 944 one of the wires from the stocks to the relay board was bad... so I just made a new jumper and solved the problem.

but that was only high beams not both high and low.

More times than not, when I push the switch to raise and shine the headlights, they will raise up and all the lights except the main beams work. I have to push the switch back to the "parking lights" position (the middle position on the switch, and this won't lower them), and then back to "main" before they will light up. Once they have lit up, everything works as it should until I lower the lights again. I'm passing it off to corroded contacts in the switch - which I understand is pretty intricate to take apart and re-assemble correctly.

I think pulling on the stalk to hit the high beams will cause the other filament in the bulb to light, but not the main beam filament. Regardless, I think it's your switch. Try pushing to the middle position and then back to the main and see if that makes it do anything differently.

The switch isn't very hard to open and reassemble, even though they say that you can't fix it, only replace it. I did it as the first thing I fixed when I got my 924. Stupid PO's mechanic had obviously done something wrong at one time, so it had melted inside. Still, a new switch from Porsche is fairly cheap, should be about 50$ or so.

I don't have a layout of the connectors, but if corrosion in the switch might be doing it, you could make some bridges using spade connectors and test them with the switch removed. (You'll have to measure which pins connect in the different positions on the switch first.)
