Hi guys, I'm new to the board and new to the porsche ownership world too. I have always loved porsches and will forever do so. I'm seventeen and just recently aquired a 1980 924, it's not a turbo but it's mine and I love to drive it. Though, it's not in horrible shape its not the best and the odometer isn't working. Might be close to 200k Kms on it. It hasn't been driven alot at all in the last 5-6 years and before then it was used only for weekends in the summer. And before that, the car was in storage for 8 years or so. I need lots of help as I put more and more money into this car and one of the first problems which needs to be addressed is the heating/air. I don't get anything coming out the vents on any of the settings! How can I diagnose the problems and which actions should I take first? Also, anything else that I need to make sure is working, especially for the forthcoming canadian winter.

Start by checking the fuses of course.

There were 2 styles of controls - the earlier one had 3 rows of full width sliders with the fan speed controlled by one of them. The later style has a rotary switch at left for fan speed and 2 rows of sliders with 2 short sliders on the top row and 1 full width slider below. I'd guess you have the earlier setup, but just in case someone has an answer for you, could you just confirm which style of controls you have?

Can you hear the fan running?
Problem could be with a fuse, wiring, the fan speed control, flap controls, or a gunked or rusted fan motor.

Check the fuse first.

Look inside the engine bay right up against the firewall and you will see the cable for the heater. It has a clip and if it comes off you will not get heat. Put the clip on and it should work.

the fan in my 931 was gummed up when I got it, but when cruising at freeway speeds i'd still get some air coming through the vents, and so I knew that the vents were ok, just the fan wasn't in action.

I took the cover off (someone else on here called it the "r2d2 cover" which is sooo what it looks like!) and gave it liberal amounts of CRC/WD-40 type stuff, which made it come good after a bit of working it and adding more lube.
you can get to the top bearing this way, but the bottom one has to be gotten to via the air box (which seems to require taking out the dash - yuk!) but in my case the top one was all that was needed.

if you're going to take the top cover off, there are three plastic pins that should pop out if you carefully pry them out with a flat blade screwdriver or thin pliers.. then the thing just comes off.
mine was a bit of a hassle because the front pin was under the fuel lines, and someone had sealed it up with a ton of silicone all the way around.
it should go on pretty easily once you're done fixing the fan.

The other thing to note.
On the early 924s the center vent... above the radio... only is used with the AC. So no air will flow through that one even with the heat or fresh air fan on max. It should however have air flowing there if you turn the AC on.

Of course.... those cars with out factory AC might have been set up differently. So.... some one else with that style can comment on that.

The heater fans are subject to failure. Part of that is due to the fact that they run all the time at low speeds for fresh air into the cabin.... and the next is the dreaded clogged battery tray issue. If the drains get clogged in the battery tray and cowl area on the drivers side...water pools doing two things. Can corrode out the battery tray with help from battery acid. 2nd it can splash over and be sucked into the fresh air intake when going through corners! Ask me how I know. I was your age when I started my journey with my 1982! Here is to many fun filled years to you and your car.

Just .... join a local club to race. Don't kill yourself or your car on the street.

You KNOW you're getting old when you start saying things like this.

Thank you so much for all of your responses. I gotta alot of things to tryout now.

But another problem has already cropped up... smoke coming out (not anymore) from what I think is the transmission housing and the engine is making funny noises squeaky noises and metalish grindy noises. I haven't checked the fluid levels yet as I'm almost afriad to drive it.
