A good friend is about to have his 1st. child & needs a family car, but wants one with a little something for dad.
He's asked my opinion, but it's been years since I had a BMW & he's looking for something more than a 320i.
4 doors & around $12,000
Any suggestions?

Ah, I'm a beemer lover from way back... so many memories

Mate, tell him to get anything with a (genuine) "M" badge!

A 4-door M3 would be sweet. Pretty sure they made them (well, I've seen 4-doors with M badges but then some owners have no shame...)
I don't know what they go for over there but maybe you could even get a mid-90's model for US$12k?

5-series are very cool IMHO. But I've always liked the 3-series better.

my housemate has a 535, I think from the late 80's, maybe 87 or 89. it's pretty nice to drive (ie, it's really smooth and uneventful) but can be fun if you want it to be.
the thing to look for (that he found) is that the auto gearboxes are *very* expensive to rebuild, and tend to have about a 200,000km lifespan. when his goes (it will be in the next couple of years) it'll be cheaper to buy a manual lexus v8 half-cut from japan, and install that!

but yeah, for a family car, the 5 series would be great, with lots of room in the back seats for baby capsules etc, and nice and comfy..

You can't go wrong with an M. I've had a '95 M3 and now a 2003 M3 Four door M3's were made in the E36 line from '96 to '98 or '99. These cars are incredible and yet are very roomy inside (no problem putting a child seat in the back). Depending on miles and conditions, these will sell from 13 to 19K.
