I was wondering how much 968s cost, i saw one with a friend the other day, and so we got curious.
Also, what exactly is a 968 mechanically (engine wise) and statistically (hp, torque)? |

| I don't know the car like an expert or an owner. But you probably know already they're a big 4 cyl (3.0 litre) with vario cam timing and a 6 speed - don't ruin the head. They're in the range of CAD $25K to $40K depending on the condition. |

The 968 is a real nice car. It is the pinacle (sp?) of the 4 cylinder cars based on the 924. Well excluding the racers and 968 turbo. Some would also argue the 944 turbo S is better. The turbo will outrun the 968.... but both cars are excellent!
The 968 does have some issues with pinion bearings in the transmission and with the Vario cam mechanisms. There have been many fights with Porsche on who will pay for the repairs.... both very costly.
The prices have continued down in the recent years on the 968s. I have seen some as low as 12K and up to 25K depending on year and condition (US Dollars)

You can find a rare example or two for as low as $10K, but they generally go for about $15K-$20K USD for a good example.
The engine is very similar to the 944S2 3.0, it's a DOHC 16 valve engine, with Variocam valve timing(like a 911), 11:1 compression, 236bhp, and 225lbft of peak torque. The best characteristic of the 968 engine is it's remarkable torque band, despite it's high specific output and high RPM capabilities. It makes over 200lbft from 2000-4500 rpm, and was the first naturally aspirated production engine to make 75lbft/liter.
The suspension is pretty similar to the 951s, except the 968 has a set of helper rear coilovers, much like the 944 cup cars did.
The 968 Turbo S was quite powerful, making 305hp, and 369lbft. The even rarer Turbo RS made 375hp, and I think a little under 400lbft. Both engines used a modified version of the 8 valve head, so engine breathing was somewhat lessened at higher rpms. There are several companies doing aftermarket turbo conversions, with power rangine from 300-550hp, and similar torque outputs. Some of these aftermarket conversions utilize the 8V head, while most use the 16 valve head.
I've read an article in which a Kokeln 968 Turbo lays a 150ft patche at 100mph on the track.

| I'd love to have one of those cars. They're my dream car. The shape and styling is great, especially in a convertible. |

I think despite the styling influences of the 911 and 928 in the 968, it really takes on a lot of 924 character. The overall sleekness, the smooth edges everywhere... It's like the 944 was skipped in the evolution.
One of these days, when I'm not so poor, I'm going to build a 968 replica, based off of a 924S... Now you might ask why I would want a replica of a car that costs $15K-$20K. The reason is, for that cost, I could build a turbo 3.0 engine and strengthen the tranny, get a fiberglass 968 body, and some serious suspension parts.
Resulting in a 2600lb 400hp 968S

GT Racing offers a full 968 body, in your choice of fiberglass or carbon fiber. I saw that one company that did the direct swap on the 924, that was pretty interesting.
The 968 body would signifigantly lighten the 924, being made entirely of fiberglass. That would have to be near 200lbs or more.

Works out to about the same all things figured... I'd be happy with the UK kit, because it's a euro 968(different turn signals), and it's tailor made for the 924
Another project for a rainy day when I have money to waste...

Well here's another one, are those 968 turbo engines (the 400hp ones) compatible with the engine mounts on a 924 at all? |

the 968 wil drop right in to a 924S/944 but to a 924 you have to change the cross member and put in some other mounts, it is alot of work the olny good think insurance will be less and it will be one helluva sleeper

Something I will do eventually, is get a 944 block and settle this once and for all. I have read that the 924 crossmember can be modified to accept 944 mounts. _________________ '81 931 in various states of assembly |
