Odometer gear - number of teeth?

Here's a teaser. Opened up the speedometer in my UK model 1982 924 Lux to find the RED plastic odometer gear cracked. Fine, count the teeth, mine has seventeen teeth. However, in the pictures I have seen in tech sections here and there on US sites, the 924 odometer seems to have BLACK gear with only eleven teeth.

Question is, is this because of the miles/kilometers difference, whereby the US odo gear has fewer teeth, and hence moves faster, as KM tick up faster than MPH?

The bottom line to this is, I need to order a new odo gear and logic says go for the 17-tooth gear as that's what I have now. Does anyone have any wisdom on this, especially any Brits who have done the same job and needed the same part?

If all other things were equal between a speedometer & odometer that registered in miles and one that registered in kilometers except the gear on the spindle of the odometer, the fewer teeth, the faster the numbers would change over. If what you say is correct (US=11, UK=17) then there are other gearing differences in the actual meter, otherwise the miles would accumulate faster than kilometers. I've never looked inside one of our speedos so don't know what is involved.

If your speedometer/odometer registered correctly before, I'd seek the 17-tooth gear.

I would order the same gear that you currently have.

FWIW, the odometer gear in my US spec '81 NA is red with 17 teeth. I know because I was looking for a replacement. Finally ended up just gluing it back together a few weeks ago. So far so good.
