I took the car down to a shop a mile or so away where a buddy of mine is a mechanic. We popped the hood, started the car, and I proceeded to have him hear "the noise". It sounds like it's coming from the engine, but I'm not 100% sure where. I started to lean over and put my ear near things when I spotted this:

I couldn't leave the car there, so I drove 'er home and parked it back in the carport. I didn't have a chance to follow the fuel line (the fitting on the left one is the leaky bit)...so how long is that sucker? Looks like I'm going to have to make a list of things to fix on this car that was "taken care of". Ugh. I hope it doesn't turn into a real pain in the butt!

IIRC it is essentiaaly sold as one piece from the fuel tank all the way up. Most folk cut the crimps and replace the flex part with high pressure fuel injection hose and clamps. Several aftermarket replacements including a braided hose replacement. The short hose that goes from there under the fuel rail is also a notoriuos one for burning up 924S/944s. That is one of the problems with sitting and not being driven. All the rubber deteriorates.

My mechanic buddy said that he thinks there was a recall on that, but he's not 100% sure.

I'm sure it'll get sorted out at the auto shop. Folks out here in Hawaii reccomended a place called MotorWerks. Apparently everyone takes their older P-cars there to get serviced.

I'll let 'ya folks know what happens.

(edit) Hmm - looks like this covers what I'm experiencing. From the NHTSA:

Quote:
Make : PORSCHE Model : 924 Year : 1987
NHTSA CAMPAIGN ID Number : 90V061000 Recall Date : MAR 30, 1990
Component: FUEL SYSTEM, GASOLINE:FUEL INJECTION SYSTEM:FUEL RAIL
Potential Number Of Units Affected : 53427
Summary:
THE HOSE MATERIAL USED IN THE SHORT SECTION OF THE HIGH PRESSURE FUEL LINE HOSE, BETWEEN THE FUEL RAIL AND FUEL PRESSURE REGULATOR, IS SUBJECT TO HARDENING, AND COULD CAUSE FUEL LEAKS BETWEEN THE HOSE AND THE METAL PIPE FITTINGS.
Consequence:
FUEL LEAKS COULD IGNITE ON THE HOT EXHAUST SYSTEM, OR ANY OTHER SOURCE OF IGNITION, RESULTING IN AN ENGINE COMPARTMENT FIRE.
Remedy:
REPLACE FUEL LINE HOSE WITH HOSES MADE OF IMPROVED MATERIAL.
Notes:
SYSTEM: FUEL LINE. VEHICLE DESCRIPTION: PASSENGER VEHICLE.

Hopefully this garage will be open tomorrow. If it is, I might see about trailering the car down there and having him start on it.

The recall is about the short hose I mentioned.
Good luck with it ... when you get all the little things sorted you will have a real gem

A recall, eh? How can you tell if your car has already been in for it? Sounds like a good way to get somebody else to replace the short hose for me!

Talk to a dealer would be my best guess. That little hose is around $40 IIRC so if you can get them to replace it it would be worth a phone call. It is about 200 miles from here to the nearest dealer so I would probably just buy the hose.

Saving $40 would be nice, but it'd also be great to save the trouble of following that hose back to wherever it goes, pulling it, and snaking a new one in. I've never seen a recall that cost anything, so it sounds like there's no way to lose here.

The recall is for a hose that is ~3.5" long.

I think I know which one you're talking about...the tiny one that makes about a 120° bend? It looks like that big line on the left goes into a filter of some sort, and then you've got the tiny line that tucks back under to go do... magic stuff.

Yup .. that little can is the fuel pressure regulator. It is a bypass system to eliminate vapor lock.

Well, I called the shop and they said they can't take me until the 25th. I threw the "official" car cover on it that the lady gave me when I bought the car until then. Holy crap that thing is reflective. Looks like a big silver blanket, but fits very well. I'm glad *I* didn't have to buy it!

Went out and messed with the car tonight to see if I could get the leak stopped. It's not the fitting that's closest to the fuell pressure regulator, it's the one that's on the hose...next to the crimp (?) fitting. It appears both of them are tight, so off to the shop she goes by tow truck tomorrow. USAA only pays for the first 10 miles, but thankfully it's only 15 miles or so to the garage. I'll let 'ya all know when she's back on the road

Got the car back fronm the shop today. The fuel line was replaced from the tank forward. Hopefully no more leaks. The whine I heard is indeed the timing belt. The shop owner said that the previous service guys installed it a little too tight, but that it would quiet down as the belt wore in. He also said that I am due for a timing belt change next year. They quoted me around $500 or so for that job, so not quite as bad as I was expecing. Oh... and (drool) he had a 935 in his garage. For some reason he turned down my straight swap offer for the 924S.
