I'm sure some of you have read some of my previous post "New Porsche Owner Needs....". Well if you havn't, here is the story. I located and bought a 1987 924S over the internet. I saw pictures, and spoke with the original owner at length, but...bought the car sight unseen. The car was bought from the original owner, and only has 27,400 miles on the car. The car has a great body, solid under carriage, and no rust, however has suffered from severe neglect. This means UV damage to the interior, to make perfect new paint would be required, wheels are oxidized etc... Here is my dilema....

I have $4200 in the car right now with shipping / transfer etc... The car ofcourse needs front engine service (belts, rollers, fluids, etc...) $1200. To restore interior $1300. Misc. (wiper motor, rear defroster, wheels, A.C. etc...) $1000, and finally new paint $1500 to $2000.

OKAY...for a GRAND TOTAL of approx. $9k to $10K. Is it worth it? Should I try and sell the car (Would make a perfect dedicated AUTO-X'r,)? Did I get in over my head? I don't need another hobby (Auto-Restoration) I enjoy cars, and wanted a Sunday driver...but I guess that's the lesson I've learned from making an impulse buy, on what I think is still a pretty darn good deal, just the water is deeper than I thought. Does anyone have any advice?

The front of engine service is a given. It has to be done. For the rest a detail shop may work wonders with what appears to be a very bad paint and interieor. The rest depends on how much you want to do yourself. At this point I seriously doubt you will get your money back out of it if you try to sell it as is. Personally I would apply some elbow grease and drive the wheels off it

No matter what you do to the car it will never be worth more than $3500.

Harsh fact, but don't focus on that, do the front service and enjoy the car, it will last for decades.

unfortunately, at this point youll loose money if you offload it.. the mechanical service is a must, but id bet with some carefull buying you can cut the cost of the interior and misc. stuff by 2/3rds.. As for paint, go with the same color, if you can get away with a light sanding and new top coat and clear..it shouldnt be nearly that much...if your really lucky, a good buffer will bring out the old paint..who knows...

Owning one of these cars is never a money making proposition.

At this point, you have $4200 in the car, and you will lose some money if you were to go ahead and unload it.

Any 924S you buy is probably going to need some work, the same as any 944 series car (944, 944S, 951, S2, 968).

At this point, getting the "front of engine service" done is a given. The car is only worth $1500-$2000 without it. With the "front of engine service" and getting the car detailed, you could probably get $3000 for it is if the body is perfect, and has never been damaged or repaired, regardless of the condition of the original paint job. If the paint if not original, the current value of the car would be 10%-20% less.

If the car was mine, I would go ahead and have the service done correctly, have the car detailed by competent professionals, and look for lowered priced replacement parts for the interior, while enjoying the car.

Keep it and enjoy it, I really like mine although it is quickly becoming a track only car. I have a mint set of seats that came out of mine if you are interested.
