Greetings all,
Can someone tell me where the wiring is routed for the rear wiper. I have a live switch at the shifter ( one of the small rockers next to the side mirror selector) but it controls nothing. I tend to believe that my 1980 931 had the wiper at one time but the rear window was replaced and the owner did not reinstall the wiper. I have not been able to trace the wires after it leaves the switch. If someone can tell me were it comes out in the back, I bet the loose ends are stuffed in there somewhere. Does it come out by the drivers side back lid hinge and run down the moulding and come out by the lid support? One of these days I would like to reinstall this wiper once I run across one.
Thanks

The PO may have stuffed a wiper switch in an empty hole.
Take a look for the wires that run from the body to the wiper mechanism, in a car with the rear wiper. The wires normally run from the center console mounted switch, to the fuse panel, have a ground wire at the hand brake, then run along the inside of the left side frame rail up towards the left hatch hinge inside the sheet metal panel on the rear seat panel. The wires should exit the body on the narrow edge of the "C" pillar (rear roof panel) to the left of the left side hatch hinge, above where the interior panel material wraps onto the edge. There is a rubber grommet with the wires exiting the body that run to a tube welded to the hatch frame that runs along the left side of the hatch to the left rear corner of the hatch glass where the wiper motor is normally attached.
Late cars all have the hole (yours is not late enough) with a rubber plug, if the wiper was not installed. If you have the glass with the wiper hole, and a plug, you can easily install the rear wiper, even if your car did not come with one originally. Porsche printed instructions in the 924T Service manual outlining how to "Service Install" (install rear wiper on a car, after the car left the Factory). |

My car originally had a rear wiper, but the rear hatch glass was replaced at some point before I got the car...now no rear wiper or hole in the glass to mount one. Anyway, the wiring's still there and a switch in the far-right position where you described - it has the well worn image of a wiper stamped onto it.
Here's where the wire goes from body to hatch -

Thanks guys
Looks like I didnt have the wiper option. I found the wires stuffed into the carpet behind the radio. I spliced it back in and the PO has it wired to the antenea. YIPPY, I can lower the antenea with the radio on.
I dont have the hole where smoothie has in his photo. I do have the hole in the window with a plug in it but I am sure this is not the original glass. I found broken glass while cleaning out the back a few years ago, and he did a horrid job with the wire to the rear defroster. Another project way down on my list.
Thanks Again
