Removing axles from tranny:

Do I need the spline key or can I just use an hex (allan) key?

What size spline key do I need?

What size hex key will work?

(I probably have the right size hex key, but I would have to buy the spline key)

Just had this problem a week ago!

What you need is a 12 point, 8mm star bit.

Yea, weird huh? The guys at Consumer Auto Parts will give you a weird look, but they had them at my local one.

8 bucks for a set of 4. (generic)

Good luck!
-Jeff

Check Canadian Tire. I think it's their Lisle line of tools. About $15.00 Can. for 4 different sizes. Not the best quality but good enough too get the job done. Whatever tool you use be sure to meticulously clean the screw heads before engaging the tool.

You can extend the life of the 12pt bits and bolt heads with Vise-Grip pliers. Loosen the bolts with the Vise-Grips on the outside of the bolt heads, then they can be easily removed the rest of the way without damage with the 12pt bit or bolt head sockets. Then with the bolts removed you can clean the bolt head sockets more easily, then use the 12pt again to reinstall and torque 'em.
Also - once there's some wear on the bit you can grind/cut off ~1/8" from the end and get some more use out of it.
