there is a nice size rust hole on my muffler and it leaks water so i don't think my car will pass aircare to get insurance because of this. can someone tell me where i can get a new muffler, should i go ask napa or lordco? and what else do i need other than the muffler to install it? Also i might be wrong but isn't the muffler welded to the car? i wan to do this mysel if it is an easy task.
thanks. |

Unless you can actually buy a complete exhaust (in which case it's just a matter of bolting it on), IMHO you are best to get a shop to do this.
A basic complete exhaust system should be quite cheap; I got a new exhaust, from the headers back, for my (now deceased) '77 BMW 320i for AU$180 -fitted. And just welding in a new muffler shouldn't be a big deal.
I don't know about the U.S.-spec 924 (I assume that's what you've got), but I doubt it's anything fancy. But they may run catalytic converters (which ours don't), so it may be more expensive to replace the entire exhaust.
But once, when my exhaust broke on the old Bimmer, I got a shop to weld in a new piece for AU$25! The exhaust pipe before the first muffler literally rusted through, and split in half! Hell of a noise Sounded like a rally car I had to drive it back from Gladstone to Brisbane the next day (about 650km/400 miles) so I had to get it fixed! They were really good, just cut out the rusted bit and welded a new bit in... of course, I eventually had to get it all replaced, as above.
I've got a stainless-steel jobbie on the Porker, so it's not been a problem. _________________ '80 924 Turbo |

| ok tanks should i get the muffler myself and take it to the shop or just get them to order it. i went to lordco and they said there is only one company that makes a exhaust system for my car and he said the whole thing form engine to muffler is 1000 cdn, its really expensive. i'm guessing muffler will be at least 150 bucks and installing it probable another 60-80 bucsk. |

You can get an ANSA OEM style cat back final muffler (one piece from the cat to the tailpipe) for between $150-$200 from many mail order shops.
Usually what dies first is the rear muffler/resonator. If the first of the exhaust system is still good, you should be able to take the car to a local muffler shop, and get a generic muffler welded into place for $50-$75. |

Don't places like Midas and Meineke still give lifetime replacements for parts and labor? I recall someone here on the Board saying that they went that route, and have gotten 2-3 free replacements over the years. May not be the least expensive approach if it's a one-time shot, but over the years it could easily pay off. _________________ '79 Eurospec 931 |

I think Stuj2 is the one with the Midas exhaust. Seems to me that he has boasted several times that he just goes in every couple of years when it rusts out and Midas replaces it for free.
Here is CA, we don't have the rust problem that the guys in the Northeast or East Coast have. I tried Midas once for a replacement exhaust, but their price was like close to $500. I got a new ANSA OEM 924 exhaust from the Pomona Swapmeet for $40 instead. It isn't as well made as the original German part, nor are the materials as good. But it is much lighter, has been on the car for six years, and still looks and sounds like new. |

IMHO the muffler for free thing is a scam. I had a car I took back to the muffler shop and they told me the engine had backfired into the muffler causing it to fail. I asked them to show me and they just pointed at a hole in the muffler so I asked for the manager. He said maybe it wasn't a backfire problem and he would be glad to provide a replacement muffler for FREE! oh yea he just had to charge me for installation, 2 hangers, the exhaust tip and a couple of clamps. With the new price list this cost $4 less than the original installation. _________________ '84 944

this is a tricky question, if you dont have a welder DONT do your own exhaust, there is only 1 way to do exhaust imo and it is not with clamps, the clamps distort the steel and they leak past it in a short period of time, I would recommend that if you dont have a good discount at lordco or NAPA that you just go to Midas Muffler and TELL them that you want the to replace the MUFFLER only on your car, at shops up here you must be SPECIFIC with what you want them to do or you will get walked over, so go to midas and say I am needing to have a replacement muffler put on and tell them you will be needing them to supply the muffler for you as well as the tailpipe (piece coming off the muffler) and you can pick whatever piece you want or just have a piece of pipe added onto the end, but if they try to get you to replace other parts tell them NO, JUST the muffler.
I could do the muffler if you picked it up as well as show you a ton of other stuff on the car, but you would have to get it to my place out in lytton which is about 3 hours away from Richmond so it is abit of a hike. _________________ 3 928s, |

Weld it on. It will shake loose in the long run. I had mine shake loose twice and at the header location. Welded a tab on the header and no more problems.
Welding avoides leaks at the joints. _________________ "Never let them see you sweat"
