another thread talked about how tolerant our partners are about our cars, and I was wondering what effect our cars have had on our luck with women?

I have been with my g/f since before I bought it, so there was no influence before we hooked up.. now she likes riding in it, but just sees it as something I like having and spending time tinkering with.

I have noticed that the only kind of women that seem really impressed by it (ie, do the full head-turn when you drive past) are the kind of women that I imagine would be high maintenance and I probably wouldn't get along with anyway..

what about you guys?

A woman did walk up to me at servo (gas station) once and commented that it was a very nice car and asked what it was. I told her it's a Porsche and she seemed suitably impressed.

My GF knows nothing about cars and isn't really interested in them (except if they're red, she has an obsession with red cars). But she did say that one of the reasons she "noticed" me is because I was out polishing my car one day when she walked past my place... reckon the car caught her eye more that me! So, maybe the little Toofah helped me out there.

Redwitch (Ali) doesn't drive, but I think she's more addicted to the car than I am! She get's withdrawal symptoms if she hasn't been out in her for a while.

Funny, they're both redheads, both expensive to run and both have regular moody phases

I suspect I'm a dead man after that last comment...

Well, the 924 did make heads turn from all sexes, and lots of girls that I know have really liked the car, just by looking at it even though they don't know that it is a Porsche.

I gues that all of the Porsches have their special attraction! I can test that with ladies when i turn 18 ...

Well depends on the age seems. In my high school years my girlfriend at the time liked saying that her man had a Porsche.

When I began dating my wife (to be) I had my 924 and also drove my Fathers 911 Carrera 4. She loved the Carrera. She seemed to like my 924 also. Now she sees it more as a car that takes time away from her.... but knows I will not part with it.

As far as head turns. Now that my 1982 has the 16 inch chrome flat dish alloys with 225s on the rear and 924S spoiler..... man to I get head turns.... thumbs up and many other gestures from other cars and women..... had wished it was because I am so good looking... ... but reality has dawned on me

Group,

Well, I don't get to drive my 924S much these days, as my wife uses it for her 42-mile workaday commute from San Juan Capistrano to Irvine and back again.

I am a freelance writer by trade, and write for fly fishing and shooting sports magazines, so my "commute" typically involves rolling out of the rack and stumbling down the hall to put the coffee on and spark up the word processor, most of the time.

A couple of months ago, I was down at Doheny Beach to catch few halibut for photos to illustrate a magazine article that I had written. As I was loading my kit into the Porsche after my mission was accomplished, a couple of thirtysomething women -divorced, based on their conversation that I could easily overhear- came jogging my way.

"That's what you need, right there, Kim. You need a REAL man, one who does man-things, drives a real-man car, and who obviously has enough money to live life right."

I have to admit that I appreciated the compliment.

"Ah, he's probably married," said 'Kim'.

"What married man drives around in a car like that, with 'baby seats' in the back? I'll bet he's divorced, like us. Probably got stuck with the kids, too. Otherwise, he'd be standing next to a minivan."

The next thing I know, 'Kim' and her friend are walking towards me, asking me questions about the kind of fish that I caught to initiate the conversation. We talked for a while, and the conversation ended with 'Kim' telling me that it was a shame that such a nice guy should have to go through life raising two small kids on his own.

"But I'm not -I'm married," I replied.

I don't think 'Kim' believed that. She handed me a business card and told me to call her if my marital situation "should happen to change."

It's kind of funny how people presume things and let their imaginations run wild, based on false assumptions that have no basis in reality.

My wife gets chatted up by men all of the time. Last night, she was telling me how some guy came up to her in the office parking lot and started asking her about her car, telling her at some point that it wasn't a "real Porsche" because it "has an Audi engine in it." My wife said that she set the guy straight at that point, telling him about how the 924S has the 944 engine in a lighter, more aerodynamic, and yes, even faster package -adding that hers was better still because it had the sport suspension option with a limited-slip differential. That seemed to really get the guy interested. When she came back out to her car later in the day, she found that he had left his phone number on a business card clamped to the window by the driver's side wiper blade.

It would seem that the value of the car in attracting members of the opposite sex works both ways. And since people presume that anything that says Porsche on it must be expensive, they further assume that anyone driving one must be successful enough financially to afford to do so, and since most people looking for love are usually seeking to pair up with the best mate they can, it is therefore logical that singles would be attracted to a person driving a Porsche, because {few things} in life scream success like a Porsche does.

I mentioned this before in a prior post on another thread, but in the corner of the world that I live in, nobody cares how old your Porsche is, or what model it is. All that matters is that you've got one.

How many cars from the 80's still work so well as 'status symbols' today? My guess is that not many do, but that doesn't seem to be the case with our 17 year-old Porsche.

Neil,

Okay, my friend. I am a professional writer, after all, so perhaps I should have been more precise with my language and wrote "few things" instead of "nothing".

That said, what good is a status symbol if no one ever sees you in it? I mean, how many people can see you cruise around in the Gulfstream on your way to your own private island paradise when you're doing 550 knots at 50,000 feet? On the other hand, when you come in for a landing in one of those babies and hit the thrust reversers, folks will certainly know that you've arrived, so I guess you've got a point.

Still, I'd rather do my "flying" a little closer to the ground. You can take the Learjet or whatever. I'll stick to flying "Air Porsche" at ground level. And while you're flying around in your jet, I'm going to go back to my prior post and edit it for the sake of accuracy!

No need. I can find fault with anything!
A jet would be cool indeed. But then you would have to learn how to fly it, buy fuel for it, check the whole thing for microfractures, leave your car unattended in long term storage, what a hassle! As for the island: build a race track on it and stay forever!!! Who needs friends when you can race all day?!

Neil,

Ah, yes, who needs friends when you can race all day, indeed! But I think life would get a little "samey", so I'd need to make sure that there were some bonefish or trevally or something I could chase around with my fly rod, just to add a touch of variety to life. It just wouldn't be much of a paradise to me with out some fly fishing and a skeet range.

The more I think about it, the more I could get in to this whole island paradise ownership thing....

Adding the race track was a stroke genius!

O my God! You actually went back and made changes!!! Maybe the writing Gods didn't see it.
Here's a writing question:
Do you see or hear a lot of mistakes when it comes to forming sentences? {Written and spoken}
I find I have become rather sloppy with my speach and posting here has made me even worse.
A former girlfriend of mine was an english student and she found a lot of people weren't speaking correctly, not even close. Saying "It's are turn" instead of "It's our turn". And running words together: "And you can come too" gets turned into: "Anjou can come to". I was a door to door salesman for awhile and had to "dumbdown" my speach to be on the same level as some of my customes. {And it seems to have stuck}
I guess my question is, do you speak as well as you write? And do you find people being lazy with their speach?

A year ago a friend showed me a website selling islands... I have been thinking about it ever since! How perfect would that be?!
It would have to be big enough so you wouldn't see the same views everyday and it can't be too big either. If it was then you might want to use an atv to get around. It must have white sand and shallow water for the first 100-150 feet. There should be many trees and high rock formations for diving. I would have a massive house, with white as a primary colour. And well, the list goes on and on and gets weird near the end.

Neil,

I was just having a bit of fun with you in going back and changing the post in question. I don't take the posting that I do here too seriously. I'm among friends in this little corner of cyberspace, and I doubt if many people here know who I am, what I do for a living, what my "claim to fame" is, or even care, for that matter.

I might have some notoeriety because of my writing, but I'm only "fly shop famous" and only here in California at that, since most of the writing that I do is for regional publications like California Fly Fisher, California Game and Fish, and Sporting Days. Still, when I post on the fly fishing boards that I frequent, I do have an image to uphold, and tend to try to be as erudite as I can with respect to what I write and how I write it.

And no, I don't tend to speak as well as I write, particularly among family and close firends. To be quite frank, I talk like a hick -with a very pronounced "southern drawl" and a disturbing tendency toward turning everything I say into an interrogitory statement. My speech is like Tulsa, Okalhoma meeting up with Kitchner, Ontario, eh? Or, like Bob and Doug Mc Kenzie spent too much time in Texas, eh?

So yeah, I find folks being lazy with speech and the written word all of the time, and I'm not only one of 'em, I'm often one of the worst offenders!

And I don't have any excuse, because I know better!

-JP

Oh, and while we're on the subject, many of the posters here are very good writers, and much of what they write is a joy to read. There are few posters, though, who write so badly that I can't bear to read what they wrote, even though what they have to say in print might be very valuable. But again, most of the folks here write pretty well, and I learn much from what they share.

nice story JP! that's a cracker. "should happen to change" is a great line!

my g/f says that heaps of people ogle the car when we're at lights and stuff, but I think they must do it while i'm not looking because I never see it happening.

and the quality of people's english? I find the worst offenders are the mixing up of the their/they're and other combinations of words that sound the same.. people seem to use the one that's easiest! it's not too bad though on here, it's much worse in some of the emails I get from friends!
