I opened my driver door to check the inside to see why it is messed up adn my key wouldn't turn. I removed the connection that is directly connected to the lock in the door handle and the screw and this other thin fell into the metal of hte car and cannot be retrieved. i took the lock out and found out it it the metal things in the lock that are supposed to go in when you put the key that don't fully go in so i removed them all, now any key turns the lock but i don' t really care as long as it locks and opens but i have lost the screw and this other springy looking thinkg on the part that connects to the lock plus i am not sure how to connect it so that it lifts the mechanism up and down i can' t figure it out. Also there is something else strang when you lock the door from the interior and pull on the outside door handle when you then pull the inerior nub up it won't go all the way up so when it is in the up position the door handle still won't open it from the outside until you pull the handle from the inside and the nob moves up more and then it will again open from the outside.
but if you don't pull the handle from the outside when it is in the lock position then when you open it the open position strange. i'm thining i'm screwed as i don't think a mechanic can fix this type of thing without big bucks.
Also i can't even connect the lock to the inside mechanism cus i am not shure exactly how it works like that can anyone tell me or post pics i don't see how i i want to connect it will pull the lock up and down......
i also lost the screw that connects the lock to the mechanism but i just bought a bunch of screws that almost fit but i also lost this other spring thing but i don't even know how it works
thanks for any help i'm freakin out |

first off what year and model, and where do you live, (now we know you cant lock it after all hehehe )
first you need to find all the pieces that you took out, if you cant find them all then I recommend you get an outer door handle with key tumbler in it either from a wrecker or from a board member, and make sure that the door handle comes with a key, if you dont then you will have to have a locksmith fab up a key and set the tumbler for it,
I recommend that you go to howstuffworks.com and look at how a lock works to give you abit better of an idea as to what you are up against, _________________ 3 928s, |

I take it that when you removed the lock cylinder from the door handle (allowed by removing the screw in the back), you did not have a key in the lock cylinder.
Big mistake, as you found out the the pieces that "follow" the bumps on the key when you insert it into the lock are not restrained, and some probably went flying when you pulled the lock cylinder out.
To restore the lock cylinder (reassemble it). You don't need all of the "followers" and springs, but you need to recognized that without all of them, you will not have all of the protection of the lock, and with none of them, anybody can unlock the door by twisting anything in the lock cylinder.
Collect as many of the followers and springs as you can find. Take the lock cylinder body, and clean it with brake cleaner to remove the old lubricant. Watch out for any springs that were trapped in the round holes by old lubricant.
Now lubricate with a light non-melting lubricant, like distributor grease.
Drop a sping down each round hole for each "follower that you have. If you don't have a spring, then you can't put back the follower. Same thing for a foller, without a spring. They must be installed in pairs.
Now stick the key into the lock body. When the bumps on the key are located correctly with the right follower that install in the lock cylinder, the follower will be flush with the lock body on both sides. Insert and remove the followers until you have the followers in the correct order so that they all are flush to the lock body when the key in fully inserted.
At this point, you have matched the key to the lock. This is the same thing that a locksmith would charge you $15-$20 to do.
Clean and lubricate the door handle hole where the lock cylinder is installed with the brake cleaner, and light grease. The lock cylinder will only fit flush in the door handle when installed the right way (there is a bump on the back of the lock cylinder, that will only allow it to fit correctly one way, as there is a matching notch inside the hole on the door handle.
At this point, you need the round spring. Without the spring, the lock is not going to work correctly. The spring is installed over the rear of the lock cylinder with the two ends located at the stub on the back of the hole where the end of the lock cylinder comes out. You need to put a small amount of tension on the spring. If you have the door handle orientated with the back side towards you, the stub on the door handle that the ends of the spring will be "stopped" on will be towards you. Drop the spring over the end of the lock cylinder with the right end over the left side of the stub. then carefully use a small pair of pliers to grab the left end of the spring, and rotate it counterclockwise to place the end to the right of the stub on the lock cylinder.
To finish reassembly you will need the screw, and the metal lock cam linkage piece. Fit the lock cam piece over the lock cylinder, with the protrusion on the back of the piece sliding down into the gap on the ends of the spring where the stub on the lock handle is located. This should place the "loop" on the lock cam linkage towards the rear of the door handle. Now put the screw back in.
If you lost the screw, or too many of the springs and followers, or want to get a lock cylinder to start fresh (you can rekey it using these instructions), you can use any old 924 or 944 (76-85/1) door handle for these parts. For the lock cylinder followers, and springs, or the screw, you can also use any 76-92 VW Rabbit, Golf, Jetta, or Audi 4000, etc front door handle. |
