my girlfriends laptop started acting up the other day and I'm trying to figure it out. The problem started when the LCD would only display when it was opened to certain positions and then about a day or two later it just wouldn't display at all. All I've got is a blank lit up screen. graphics card isn't fried, I can still output the signal to my monitor and use the computer fine, I opened it up and checked all the connections and none of them seem to be loose or burned out. I don't think the LCD is burned out but I don't know too much about them. Anyone got any diagnosis(sp?)?

sounds like your lcd power inverter is toasted, or possible the transfer ribbon went bad.. .. most of them are replacable..but its not really a DIY project unless your good with micro electronics.. the part itself ranges from about $40 to a bit over $100 depending on the model.. im just an amatuer, so others maybe more helpfull...

It does sound like a hardware problem, but since it's free and easy you might go to the laptop manufacturers' website and look for any updates to the video driver.

My thinkpad does this all the time. When I turn it on I get a white screen and if I hit the back of the lcd in just the right place it will come back on. Took it apart and it turned out being the cable where it plugs into the back of the lcd. If I plug it all back in tight it will work fine for 3 months or so and then start acting up again. It sucks taking it apart every couple of months .... maybe I should try a new cable altogether next time it happens.

ok the problem is one of 2 things, either the LCD is fried, or the LCD inverter board is fried,

if the notebook is a HP ZT1XXX unit call HP tech support and tell them that the LCD is out and that you read a document saying HP was covering that part for the life of the product, if they say that is untrue talk to a supervisor

if the notebook is anything else call the manufactor and send it in to them for them to fix it, plan anywhere from $650 - $1200 for them to replace it as both pieces which fail are built into the screen and are replaced as a unit, DONT GO TO ANY RESELLERS FOR THIS!!!!
AND BACKUP ALL DATA ON THE COMPUTER, if they format your drive that is your problem, noone cares about YOUR data other than you!

Thank you everyone for all the replies. I'll double check the connections and make sure they are good but if I don't get any results from there I'll probably just tell her to toss the laptop since it's a compaq 1900 series from like 5 years ago.
