I've been getting a bad rattle sometimes, and my car sounds less sporty. Looking underneath I see that where the exhaust pipe goes into the muffler, on the front side, it's totally loose, and the muffler swings on it's hangar and rattles.

should there be a part there, holding the muffler on or should I just weld the two together?

Dunno if you guys have the same system layout as the UK.. but here my '78 system is as follows:
Front pipe joins to center box via a pair of 3-bolt plates (one plate on the front pipe, one on the box nipping together).
Center box joins to a single large (2 box) rear section via a normal compression joint, ie one pipe slides into the other and is clamped in place.

So the front part of your muffler is clamped on? I'm talking about the part directly above the left axle.

Sounds either like a different set-up for you guys, or your rear section is bust... from the front box (under the front of the car) there is only one complete section all the way to the back - has the rear "muffler" and a smaller box combined in one huge section - no joins anywhere at the back...

Thanks. If it's all supposed to be one big peice. I'll just weld it back together. the seam where the pipe enters the muffler must have broken.
