This is my official "nOOb" post. I am new to the 924 scene and frankly new to the auto-mechanic scene - a true wet-back I am. So feel free to poke your fun my way when you reply to my posts.

In the meantime, check out my website:
http://www.lirdies.com/924

I look forward to participating in this board.

Welcome to "The Club"! Glad you got a decent one first up.

Cool site. But I read in the first paragraph that you call the 924 "the poor man's Porsche..."
'Round here, we've always called Mazda's RX-7 the poor man's Porsche, since it seemed to be such a blatant rip-off, in style at least, if not engine choice

Hey Derek, nice talking to you over the phone. Tell your bodyman to give me a jingle when he is ready to come and get the hood.

Nice car you picked up. Although... I will "pick" on you and let you know you need to make one clarification under the specs.

The US/Cal market 79 924, came with the lower 8:5:1 compression ratio pistons. Which means your car, if it is an XG,XE engine code will only produce 115 hp @ 5750 rpm. Look here for a full explanation----------------------------> http://www.connact.com/~kgross/FAQ/944faq02.html

Ok, I`ll poke another one at ya check the spelling on "brake calibers" it is spelled "calipers" You asked for it!

You will eventually lose your noob status after 500 posts or so.

Welcome, and keep in mind that there are many knowledgeable people here, from all walks of life, that can answer to your 924 dilemmas.

Thanks for the replies guys - its always nice to have a warm welcome.

When I told my brother (a VW fanatic) I got the 924 he said "Cool, a poor man's porsche" - then went out and bought the BMW 2002 he always wanted. Since he is much more of a wrencher than I, I figured he had heard something I hadn't - and it made sense from the research I had done. In any case, I think I like the notion of labeling the RX-7 as the poor man's porche a little better!

I'll get the spelling corrected and the spec changed as well - thanks for the information, I welcome it anytime.

jpab - I spoke to my buddy and he will be calling you in the morning to make arrangements - thanks again for having a spare hood!

welcome.. I am very new to the 924 world too (and working on cars) so I know what's it's like.
but, don't worry.. you'll learn quickly! if your car is like mine (ie, has original rubber parts still on it) and the cold weather sets in, you'll soon learn about things!

and you've come to the right place for help - these guys seem to know just about everything..

The "poor mans Porsche" reference was often used in reference to the 924 by magazine writers way back when.. (usually 911 purists who were too ignorant to do their home work) ... so no worries about accuracy there.. in fact, as a spoof (and to tick off the purists) i ordered custom vanity plates for my 87' 924S, before its demise... ----- "POORSH"

YOu would not beleive how ticked off some people got over it.. most just incorrectly assumed that it stood for a ny style "porsh" pronunciation, but a few figured out the "poor mans porsche " thing(note the two "o's".. either way, the purists hated it.

ill get the same plate down here in fl for my 931 once its completed..

so welcome to the fold, have a good time, dont forget your sense of humor..and ask lots of questions.. the crew likes a challange..Oh and for custom monogramed autrailian toothpicks, see Vince..

Calibers are right next to the adjustment part of the rear brakes. Have them cleaned and returned and you will have good brakes.

Calipers are the size of two fists. Calibers and much smaller.

Nice car. Ask questions. Sometimes you will get the right answers.

Welcome
