overnight someone decided to put something hard through the back window of my car (drivers side) as it lay sleeping in my driveway.
when I found it this morning the drivers door was open a little (never a good sign) but I can only think they were disturbed, as nothing was missing (or even touched).. there was *lots* of nice stuff in the car, so it's good that nothing walked.

anyway, so apart from being pissed off that I can no longer drive it anywhere in this horrible weather we're having (or park it anywhere public) I now have to get the window replaced.
how much is this thing likely to cost?

i'll have to negotiate with my insurer about excess and the 1000 other issues, but i'd like to also not get ripped off on the quote..

I searched here, but couldn't find anything. any help appreciated!

You should be able to replace the window yourself. E-bay has the rear quarter glass listed all the time. I think the "going rate" is somewhere in the $20-30 range. You can probably pick one up at a local salvage yard for cheaper, given the shipping costs to you guys Down Under.

The quarter windows don't have much resale value. If I were you, I would not even bother to tell my insurance company, because up here in CA, you would not get a $1 after the insurer takes off the deductable. And the next insurance period, they raise your rate.

The windows have sold for as little as $5 a piece on eBay with the rubber seal. That makes it cheaper to buy a complete used window (with glass, rubber seal, and metal trim), than it would cost to buy the metal trim, or the rubber (seal from Porsche is over $50) alone from Porsche.

I sold my last pair (left and right) of windows for about $10, with the rubber and all from the 83 944 that I parted out.

Breaking the little window is a favored way of getting into these cars for stealing (the whole car), because it's cheap to replace that window. Why break a big window that'll cost more, right? So, whoever it was might actually have been relatively smart, though not smart enough to get a real job and not smart enough to know you have to floor it (or at least blip the throttle) to keep Kye's car running.

thank goodness they're not like the costs of the other windows! I was dreading to think how many hundreds I was up for..

and I don't think they tried anything smoothie. literally, they grabbed nothing out of the car, and there are no signs of tampering. i'll start it up tomorrow and make sure, but it looks good.

Funny how thinks work. I just got back from Australia and he needs glass. I have four of them in the garage. I would have brought one.

Kye, give Swan Porsche Parts a call. They are always dismantling 924's and should be able to supply.

yeah, just popped out to swan porsche and got a replacement.. AU$40 and I got to choose which colour tinting!
thanks for the offer vince, but freight in between here and the US isn't really cheap enough to make shipping anything large worthwhile..

now to install it!
the guy at swan said that you remove the rubber surround with a screwdriver, and then use a piece of string to put it back in again.
I thought it was in the Haynes and so I didn't ask too many questions, but i've just looked and it's not in there.
any advice? (apart to wait for this terrible rain to stop before starting the job!)

Search the archives for "rope trick" and use some imagination. I've never used it personally, but have heard for the past 20+ years that it's the way to replace many windshields and quarter panel windows (regardless of car mfg).

soap up the body so the rubber slides on easier. put the glass in the rubber and get some sturdy string and lay it on inside the outer rubber where the body would go. put on corner in first and have aaaaah, mate push while you are in the car trying to get the rubber to slide under the body. the string pulls the rubber into the car if you get it right. The guy on the outside should be pushing the glass and the rubber inward.

I have done this about 15 times and it gets easier evertime. questions email me. Or PM me.
