The electric windows on my 1978 have stopped working for the passenger. I took apart the switches and discovered the springs to be so bent and degraded it won't hold the bearings in place (one of them now missing). I have been trying to find later replacements but so far, not much luck from any of the used parts people I know. Is it possible to order a new spring and new bearings somewhere, the switch and contacts are still in reasonable shape? Has anyone tried removing the old mechanism and putt electric push buttons underneath to make the appearence the same but the functionality better?

Minus000 this will give you a laugh if nothing else !

When I bought my 24 the window switches were shot same symptoms as yours, after a bit of thought my wife in her wisdom came up with Quote : "what about those click top pens with the springs inside wouldnt one of those do". After I stopped LMAO I actually tried it. Guess what it works the springs are a similar size and diamater to fit in the hole on the rocker part of the switch. As for the ball bearings I got mine at an auto jumble so cant help you on that one unless you are UK based I have a load spare willing to post some if it helps.

Buy a new switch. They cost less than $25 new, from any of the aftermarket parts suppliers.

The early switches with the balls inside of them fall apart, and sometimes short out the switch internally, causing a short, and permanent damage to the car's wiring harness.

The switch was redesigned with a part to replace the ball and spring assemblies with a "capped" tube and sping that holds the end of the spring, and prevents it from flying out/off and causing problems.
