|
|
So, it was a hot day on Saturday and I went to pay a visit to someone in hospital.. 20 minute drive and some open road, so naturally on a nice day like this i'm being a bit naughty with the speed limits After the visit I'm walking back to the car when i notice something looks wrong at the back, something hanging down under the car... damned fuel pump had only broken free from it's bracket and was now hanging by the flexi pipes and wires! Worse still one end of the pipe was lying on the driveshaft! christ knows how many miles it had been like that for, thankfully obviously not many since the pipe wasn't damaged from rubbing on the shaft.
Now i had a problem though - i needed to secure the thing for the drive home and had exactly one small lenght of thin wire and a short length of electricians tape.. was enough to tie the pump into place (bracket on the body was still in place) and i drove home real slow on tenderhooks praying it would stay in place! Had visions of it coming off, the pipe coming away and petrol spewing everywhere, add the hot day to that and my mind had all these images of flames lapping around the car! Got home fine though and there's no leaks evident. phew! _________________ Mars Red '78 Euro 924 n/a

and the moral of the story is......
Always carry some cable ties!
I have a little tool pouch with a socket set, screw drivers, electrical tape, cables ties and amalgamating tape (for water pipes). Thankfully not had a need YET, but other folks have benefited.

Annoyingly, I normally have ties, but I'd used all the last lot up when we put the new motor in, tidying cables etc.. stupidly never replaced them.
Man I am so glad I walked upto the car from the rear though, 15 mile drive home coulda led to disaster if i hadn't
I've never drove with one hand on the wheel and the other on the fire extinguisher before! _________________ Mars Red '78 Euro 924 n/a

Any £1 shops around your way? There's a few up this way and they all sell a decent range of cheap tools, a fiver spent in there will set you up with a set of spanners, screwdrivers, wd-40 and other bits and bobs - perfect for throwing into a little bag in the boot.
Of course if you're a goofball like me then you end up taking them out to do something in the house and forget to put them back again _________________ Mars Red '78 Euro 924 n/a

In case on emergancy you can use your shoe laces or take some plastic shopping bags and braid them into a length of rope.
