the headlights of my car don't come up and i don't know what the problem is. i first thought that the problem lay within the relay, so i got e new (second one) relay but the problem remained.
Than i checked the fuse and this was broken but after i replaced it the lights went up but the are not comming down. i checked the switch by connecting the wires directly without the switch. i also checked the plug for good contact and this was also not the problem.
i noticed that a grey wire at the back of the plug is connected between one grey wire and one attachment on the plug, is this okey?
after this i disconnected the relay and i put a wire between 30 and 87 and than the motor kept turning. any other connection didn't gave any action.
does the motor need to go one direction for opening and the opposite direction for clossing and does any other connection with 30 (maybe 87a) need to close the lights.
i hope that i have give enough information for helping me with this problem

No, rotation is one direction only, as I recall. It is still very possible that there is a bad connection at the motor; it's also possible that the contacts inside the motor are not working. However, the good news is that your motor does turn, which should mean that it is good and does not need replacing! You should only need to get the switches and relay working properly.
Inside the hub of the motor, where the gears are, there are brush contact switches which move along tracks on the side of the gear (a stamped metal plate is attached to the side of the plastic gear). The location of the brushes relative to the gear are what control the motor going up and down. It is usually the case, when the motor only goes to one position, that one of the 4 pins at the connector are worn and not making good contact.
Turn the lights on to raise them. Then turn the lights off (at the switch) and wiggle the connector. You'll probably find that the motor suddenly goes down. Assuming this is the case, you just need to tighten up that connection (on the female side, or by adding solder to the male pins, or replacing the female pins entirely).
Also - what year is your car? The motor wiring was changed, this is necessary to give the correct instructions. _________________ Vaughan Scott

I have a 77 and the lights wouldn't raise up but they would lower. If I moved the manual knob several turns they would open on their own. It turned out to be a bad diode in the motor wiring. Be careful, other years didn't use diodes and if you get the wrong year's part (or advise) you can get smoke.
try to lower them manually and if they catch and go down it will probably be the same. You can test this by taking it out and apart and testing each diode with an ohm meter. one way yes, one way no, if no and no or yes and yes then the diode is bad. you can temprarily fix it by clipping one on the old one with a couple of test jumpers. _________________ The Porsche is now my son's, my car is cooler, slower but cooler. |

I had the same problem in my '77. Cleaned the contacts inside, no change. the diodes were bad, luckly had a spare motor to bolt on. Jamming on opening or closing causes the diodes to burn out.

just a thought, but check for obstruction in the mechanism as well.. if somethings sticking or jamming, it may exhibit similiar symptoms... _________________ Eric
