|
|
I know normally in most car forums you will probably hear of people who want to convert their windows from manual winders to electric windows, so my question is a bit odd.
Is there any production cars (such as VW's or Audi's) which use the same window mechanism as a 924 without electric windows?
Or...
Does anyone know of a production car (such as VW's or Audi's) which would be a good candidate for donating their manual winder mechanism to convert my 924 electric windows to manual opperation?
I know this sounds crazy, but I am in the process of building a second 924 just for track day use, and want to put it on a diet.. not that the 924 electric mechanisms are much lighter than manual winders, but it will mean I can completely loose the door cards, the window loom and cut one more circuit out of the cars electrics and generally simplify the car.
I just know there is going to be loads of people who decide to question what I want to do, rather than advising on how I do it... So before you start with posts along the lines of "Why do that" or "you will not save much weight", please understand I am committed to loosing the electric windows, and want to source the parts from a car thats easier to find in a junk yard than another 924, both for doing the conversion, and for making sure I can find spare parts in the future also. _________________ Paul

The 924 winders would have been out of the Audi/VW parts bin but I don't have part numbers. I'd guess early Golf/Rabbit but that's only a guess.
Why not just look an early poverty-pack 924 being parted-out and grab the winders? _________________ 1979 924 (Gone to a better place)

This is actually more common than you think with these cars. Weight savers for those interested. I keep all manual window set ups and pawn off the power crap.
If it were not for the shipping I'd send you some mechanisms. Should be no problem finding them in the UK though. _________________ MJ

spent the afternoon going through the exploded diagrams of VW parts on the VW computer... turns out (unless I missed something) that all the VW and Audi manual winder mechanisms opperate as a cable setup, rather than a scissor setup like a 924... although I expect I could cludge one of these cable mechanisms to work, its a bit more work than I was hoping to deal with..
I am still sure that Porsche didnt go through much effort to design one off manual winders for the 924, and still suspect they brought them in from an existing car... the porsche ones have a 477 part number, so it still indicates a VAG part.
If only you guys with manual winders were in the UK, I would do a trade in a flash... but sending packages in or out of the UK is a nightmare and expensive |
