Well, Joe, my cell phone didn't work in the US of A either. One big bad thing about all those de facto standards...
Over in Europe, the cell phone system is called GSM and I know you guys have another one (can't remember the name, though). There are some cell phone models over here that can handle both the US system and the European one but I can't afford one... G'damn business models...
If you're going to ship a car over here, you don't have room enough for a Ford GT or Ford Mustang V8 2004 in the same container, can you??? Could be a nice daily driver for me!

I'll bite; To the best of my knowledge, a tri-band phone will work anywhere - unless Hungary's system is somewhat archaic.
My parents travelled around the world a couple of years back and their phone worked everywhere.
Generally speaking, if you want to use your service provider in the 'States then it depends on their ability to provide an international roaming service, the phone itself will probably work on the local networks. _________________ '80 924 Turbo |

Newer cell phones in the us are GSM for voice and GPRS for data. The older phones are TDMA for voice (not sure about data). GSM phones will work in Europe. Kahl is probably right about the roaming service though. Plus those roaming charges could bankrupt you.
Different countries have different regulations for importing cars. You might find the duties and taxes could be pretty expensive. I would also check on the registration fees. Insurance would also be another issue. I dont know if your current carrier would cover you in Europe. My brother in law brought his car from Puerto Rico he ended up having to provide receipts and swearing an affidavit for some body work that was done. I am not sure why they made him go through all that but it cost him an additional $170 by the time he was done. All togeather it ran him like $700 to bring the car here, and we had to drive to Jacksonville (8 hours) to pick it up. _________________ 1981 924 NA

| Joe, the Germans are not ready to see a car like yours. My guess is you'll be locked up. Germans take driving VERY seriously. |

| Regarding the phones, I travel all over the world and a GSM phone would be the way to go. GSM is available in most large cities in the US (T-Mobile, AT&T, Cingular). A US GSM phone is normally tri-band while not all European GSM phones work in the States. I recommend T-Mobile as the service provider since the other companies do not have as extensive sharing agreements outside of the US with international providers. I am partial to SonyEricsson phones, but Nokias are pretty good too. They have served me well from Eastern Europe to Asia, Middle East and Latin America. On the cost side, I find that it is cheaper to use my cellphone than pay hotel phone charges. Plus the advantage and safety factor (in some countries) of having a seamless communication tool is very important to me. |

if you really need a phone that will work anywhere, go toyour local cell phone dealer and ask about a world phone. I know that Motorola makes one (my buddy has it, and it wasn't that expensive), and I'm sure that other manufacturers make them as well...
and...
