Hello again all. In the process of restoring my '79 924 and was wondering about a tranny swap. I have an '84 944 that I'm using for parts on my other resoration project and am thinking about using the 944 transmission in the 924. Is this possible without a ton of modification? Also, are there any benifits to doing this? Any special parts needed, etc? Any and all help is greatly appreciated. Thanks!

It depends on what tranny you have on it right now. I believe you should have the 5 speed snail shell tranny in your 924 right now. up and left should be reverse and down from that 1st. The snailshell is lighter than the other tranny from the 944 but it is knows to eat syncro's. In order to do the swap you will need to get the torque tube shift linkage and tranny from the 944 and install them on the 924 and you might need a different clutch, I can't remember the size of the shaft on the 79 torque tube.

I'm split between RTFAQ and Read the Tech Section.

It's covered better in the latter, in the section... yep, you guessed it, Transmission.

You'll need the 944 torque tube as well. I ran this conversion for a while in my '79.
