As some of you know I was building myself a portable garage in the middle of this winter. I built it as a kit so that when I move I can take it with me. It will break up into small sections for easy transport.
Also, as some of you know I have aquired 2 more 924's, and have been preping my 931 for fresh paint, (alot to take on at the same time, but oh well).
I've finally have some photos scanned to share with you guys. I resized them quite small to keep the page from loading too slow.
These photos are a week or two old now I think. I've done alot to these cars in this time. I'll try to get some updated photos posted soon.
Before you see them, yes I know my 931 is looking pretty bad right now... but she'll be more beautiful then ever soon.
A little trashed, but just wait till I'm done. _________________ 81' 931 |

Well I see a lot of potential there ... and if you lived here that garage would be a potential kite Looks like it is doing it's job really well though. I need to set up something like that so I can have some shade in the summer. _________________ Glenn Neff

I must be nuts.
I just finished painting the 924Track car twice in three years and the Euro 931 once in the same time frame and I look at these cars and want to go and fix and paint them. Currently I am helping a friend with a MGB, XJ6 2dr, a BMW, a 914 with a chevy in it, a Chevy truck and a copy of the Munsters coffin car.
Something about masking tape, bondo, hammers, paint, thinner, and the paint shop girlie magazines makes me want to pick up some sand paper and get to work.
Okay, so it is only the girlie magazines. _________________ "Never let them see you sweat"

Oh... it is a potential kite. That's why you see the rope hanging there. On very windy days I tie it down to a car. The ground is thawing though and soon I'll be able to drive some 2+ foot stakes.
I'd dare guess the full garage weighs in at under 200- 250lbs. And 3 or 4 minutes with a 100btu space heater is all you need to get the chill out even on the coldest days.... so it's nice. In the back you can see a circular thing in the rafters. I built a shroud around an industrial fan, cut a hole in the back tarp, and pushed a little trashcan with the bottom and back cut out, pinned it on... makes for a good source of fresh air. All I need now is proper lighting. I have halogen lamps, but they're blinding. When I get the money to invest I'll get a few 8 footers. This "garage" is 18 x 24 foot, I know it's not a real garage, (though I may reffer to it as one), it's the best I can do for now, and I'm happy with it. Total cost to build was, (I'd guess), around $250- including the industrial fan. I got lucky the discount ware-house had most of what I needed. The enterance, (though covered with a tarp at this point), is 8 feet of a side wall, and 8 feet of the front wall. So it's pretty easy to get 3 cars this size into.
I figure oneday if I can ever afford a house, this would make for an ideal paint booth to set up behind the garage... so I think it was worth it for the long haul. And like I said, for now I'm happy with it, and I still feel it was worth what I went through to build it in sub-zero temps. And surprizingly being that cold, all but 2 of my welds held through the 30+mph winds, 8-10" of snow.
Looks like I'm rambling, I was just a little excited to show you guys this. I got ragged on so much from the people around here that it would not withstand even a couple inches of snow, and wind would rip it right apart. So I guess I'm a little proud of it, even if it's not all that pretty. But it looks good enough not to be an eye soar, so my landlord is ok about it. In fact I think he's happy about it because I'm not working on cars infront of the world now.
Looks like Vince is biting off alot to chew.
I'm a little overwelmed, but not too bad, I'm pretty sure I can see it all through.
Vince, if what you're working on isn't enough for you you're more than welcome to come up and play around on the 24's with me. I'd even be willing to pick up some girly mags. _________________ 81' 931 |

Weve already covered this Vince, you ARE nuts.. however..thats a good thing.. ill trailer my 931 up and leave it in your driveway, back in a month and it should be painted and ready to go by then..
I like the portable garage, how much do they get for something like that?? Oh yes, and use #993,247 to further prove the versatility of a 924, tent anchor... _________________ Eric

Thanks Eric.
If I couldn't get the supllies from a discount store, and I did actually get a quite a bit of it from Home Depot, my guess is it would have cost between $200- and $250- without the fan. Idealy one of those heavy silver tarps should be used for the roof portion, but I didn't have the money to invest at the time, and would not have anyway not knoing yet how well it would all hold up, (the thick silver tarps are expensive). If you want an idea, the roof is covered with a 24x 30' tarp 5 feet hanging off the back, one foot hanging over the front, the sides are edge to edge, (they should be another foot each side). So anywhere from 24 x 24 too an ideal 26 x 26... or what I used.
Here ya go, 24 feet from side to side over the roof, 18 feet side to side straight... what's the pitch? _________________ 81' 931 |

I get a slope of 10.66" per foot (10.66/12).
I'm not a carpenter, but have my sources (a book). Pitch is expressed as rise divided by the span. From those measurements I get a rise of 8' and you say the span is 18', so pitch is 8/18 or 4/9.
Hey! If you spend some time inside there in the blue light during the day, does everything look extra yellow when you first step outside? _________________ "..it's made in Germany. You know the Germans always make good stuff."

You are correct that is if I remember the calculations correctly. I haven’t done any framing in a long time. Now as a construction superintendent I don’t have to do the work just make sure everyone else does.
Pitch 10 37/64” /12”
Rise 7’11 ¾”
Diagonal 12’
Run 9’
I was going to put the triangle in to illustrate but I can’t figure out how to do it. Oh well my ramblings don’t require an illustration, I’m sure everyone gets the picture. Is there a doctor in the house? _________________ 1980 931

A couple photos of how gutted she is, and the extent I'm going with it.
It should look nice when I'm done.
Hopefully this one will prove to be more reliable than the 31.
*edit* note the empty Diet Coke bottle.... These cars will drive you to drink. _________________ 81' 931 |
