|
|
I have a foot long tube that is attached to the back of the snailshell, it has been the cause of a rattle. I tightened the bolt and it stopped for a while, now I hear it again. Can I remove this thing or not?
Peace

this stell tube is mounted onto the back of the tranny so in the event of a MAJOR rear ending the gas tank wont be broken open, you can remove it w/o any consiquences just dont get rear ended badly, _________________ 3 928s, |

Thanks Lizard, have you removed yours? It is just so annoying to hear that thing vibrate, I thought if I could wedge a piece of rubber within the tube somehow to cushion it...I don't know, I quess I will just take it off.
Peace

If you get rear-ended real hard in one of these cars you're probably gonna die anyway.... might aswell go out in flames. _________________ 81' 931 |

jgolfer, I do not have it in my car, mine didnt rattle, although if the bolts are tight and it is still rattling then you need to inspect tranny and engine mounts _________________ 3 928s, |

My impression of that tube was that it was just a mass hung on the back to eliminate a vibratory mode that would be objectionable (by changing the resonant frequency). Ran fine without it. _________________ Vaughan Scott

What steel tube behind the snailshell?!? The only thing attached to mine is the hanger "arm" that supports the muffler. Is this a US/Canadian-spec car addition? _________________ '79 Eurospec 931 |

It is in fact a 'crash' part extending behind the snailshell transmission. If you look on the forward wall of the spare tire well you'll find a matching casting (I think it was) bolted to the wall. Provides a strong solid impact area to the 'tube'. If the plate is missing look for the 3 bolt holes that held it.
Can't imagine what would rattle. _________________ John

Yeah, must be a US/Canadian option.
Mine is like yours, support för muffler.

Yep, probably necessary to pass US crash test standards, like the extended bumbers. _________________ 1980 924 Turbo |
