Is the steering rack on the 82 931 (with 5 bolt suspension) the same as the rack on the 83 944?

Dave,

The parts and tech manual lists them as different part numbers.

True, but will they interchange. I've found several instances of the number being different from another part that will interchange from Audi/VW. Since my ps rack in my 951 may be damaged from an accident, I was thinking of using one from an 82 931. That year is supposed to have the same suspension as the 83 944, and if that's true, then the rack should work with minor modification.

id strongly suggest you verify this, but im 99% sure they will interchange, i believe the only difference is the turning ratio, as the 931 has "quicker" steering... I seem to remember someone using a 931 as a drop in replacment on an early 44' for track duty... double check this though, my memory might be off a bit... maybe try a search on rennlist, or the old boards here...its in one of those places i probably saw it....

You're talking power steering vs manual. I think an early 944 manual rack will interchange; but not with the power rack.

physically I believe it will bolt up and be able to connect (may also need the shaft that runs from steering column to rack with 2 U joints) and the tie rods should connect, however you would also need to eliminate the power steering pump and hoses from the car

won't interchange...why you ask

steel crossmember on the 924 and 931

aluminum crossmember on the 924S and 944

rack mounts with bolt hole brackets welded to rack on the steel member

rack mounts with aluminum clamp saddles (not fixed) to rack on the aluminum member

If you cut the bolt hole brackets off the early rack and check the diameter of the rack you might be able to mount it. I think you will have to make some bushings.
