Made recent post about a loud whining noise in the transmission on a 1987 924S automatic. Took Lizards advice: changed fluid & filter. The fluid was dirty & contained lots of sediment. It still whines but not nearly as loud, so some improvement has occurred. Would driving a few miles, then change the fluid again help? Or, do these transmissions normally have a mild whine? Thanks in advance for any comments or suggestions. Just bought a bastardized 1980 924 turbo on ebay for $1,000.00. Has a 944 turbo nose & the mileage is in kilometers. Needs paint & ??? This makes 12 Porsches. Dick Price.

I have no advice to offer, but i did notice on your site you have an 84 Maserati Bi Turbo. I've had a standing offer to buy one of these that's been in storage, for future reference, (if you don't mind), what do you figure one in great shape is worth?

oh.. and good luck collecting the full set.

I have read and heard from a lot of sources that the gearboxes can make a sound of a "jet fighter" whatever the hell that is. If you flush out the oil again I'm sure you will have even less noise. There may be some wear causing the noise as well.

Thinking about it... my old Dakota made some weird noises in the tranny before i lost Reverse... that was an automatic. I believe I was told there were bands of some sort in the tranny that controled 1st and rev. and they were the cause of the weird sound. I replaced the tranny and called it good.
Other than that I know nothing about automatics... and that was a Dodge.

Dick:

That's what I would do. Drive a bit, then change the fluid and filter again. Fluid and filters are cheap. I have also gone to synthetic transmission fluid on all my cars so equipped. Still cheap compared to a tranny.

Good luck.
