I just bought a '92 Passat with the 2.0 16 valve motor, with a 5 speed. I love the car, but it's got two oil leaks from the top end. The head gasket leaks from around the oil drains to the crank case, I'm told this is very common and is easily remedied by using a new gasket, they revised the old design and fixed it.

The other leak is what concerns me, the oil seal in the distributor shaft is leaking, and it's filling the distributor with oil, according the mechanics. I haven't looked yet myself, but I'm not too happy with it.

Does anyone have any experience with leaky 16V motors who could lend some insight here? I don't want to replace the whole distributor if I don't have to, it should be just the seal, right?

If it's German, it leaks. Just check my sig. Anyway, have you checked your crankcase breather? When you start spouting spontaneous leaks sometimes it means the crankcase pressure is too high, maybe the PCV valve is bad. Can't hurt to take a look.

True, I didn't think to check that, thanks Dan
