Augidog,
Check the cable end at the front hub to make sure the clip didn't come loose and let the cable retract into the axle. Also check the cap at the speedometer under the dash to make sure it hasn't loosened up. If the cable is broken, remove the clip and pull it out of the axle then remove the cable from the speedometer and pull it out from under the dash. I found a VW replacement (one piece) for my 80 NA at the local auto parts store.

If you have a counter box under the hood for emissions, the plastic where the cable connects to the box sometimes breaks and the cable disconnects. You can pull the box out and replace the two cables with a one piece, as suggested. I replaced mine with a single cable but left the box there anyway since it has an electrical connection to it from the dash OXY indicator light. But I'm not sure if your model year has the counter box or not.
Also, if you have a one piece cable in there already, don't forget you can replace just the inside cable without having to remove the sheath out of the firewall. I think you have to buy the whole cable, sheath and all though. 'Bout $20 on ebay.

Augidog check the dust cap the cable end that fits in the cap is square
so the cap hole should be square I had one go round on me causing the same thing you described.Other than that the cable is just routed thru a hole on the firewall down to the drivers side front wheel. I dont know how to pull it from the spindle though. My guess is that its held onto the back of the hub with a rubber grommet (with a hole in the center) that is pushed into the back of the hub. The cable just runs through the rubber and through the spindle. You should just be able to pull the cable and the rubber grommet out. Maybe with a screwdriver. Yups, just remove the clip at the dust cap and the cable pulls right out from the other side. I don't even recall there being a grommet - just a hole.
If you are replacing the cable, unscrew it from the back of the speedometer, then just pull it into the passenger compartment a foot or so, cut off the end and securely tape the new cable end to the old one and use the old one to pull the new one down into the engine compartment. _________________ "..it's made in Germany. Yes, easy replacement, everyone here has covered the issues. Two small points....
1. When you pull out the old one, pay attention to the way it was routed from the back of the speedometer to the wheel hub through the engine bay, I didn't and it took a few tries to get it correct.
2. If you have the mile counter box for the oxygen sensor, you can always just remove it and use the simple one piece speedo cable as opposed to the two piece cable. I did that and just removed the mile counter box. Of course the OXS light on your dash will never show, but you should be able to survive without it (however, don't forget to change the O2 sensor at the appropriate time). _________________ 1987 951 - M193 Version for Japan |
