I've got a nasty head gasket failure on my hands here, leaking onto the downpipe, and burning coolant.
What's the best source for a head gasket? I'd like to upgrade to the 931 headgasket for better sealing. From what I've read in the tech section, the original 924 gasket is no longer being sold, and the 931 gasket is the part the dealership will sell you. _________________ '81 931 in various states of assembly |

Whoever has it cheapest this week. Nothing specail about it and at the compression ratio these cars run there is no need for anything special. The Turbo gasket used to be much more expensive than the na part. If that is still the case it is a waste of money. _________________ John

I'd have to agree that the parts for this are quite cheap - however porsche do still sell the head gasket kits or at least they do here in Germany - I purchased a kit in December for 70 Euros (£49.00).
It is cheaper to do the job yourself - a local garage here wanted 650 Euros (£460.00) - this is because of the labour involved to do the job right and replace all the gaskets when putting the head back together so I decided to bite the bullet and did it myself - it was easier than I thought - just make sure you label everything as you take it apart to assist putting it back together.

I have no qualms about doing the job myself, besides, I can't afford to pay someone else to do it for me
Does anyone have experience with the Fel-Pro head gasket? I have a good offer on one locally, and I'm thinking that's my best option. _________________ '81 931 in various states of assembly |

Yeah, I've used them, no issues. Typically through my local sources I get the Victor Reinz set, but I think you'll be fine with a Fel-Pro.
Make sure to use this opportunity to replace those valve seals, even though you have to borrow a valve spring compressor and it's a PITA - that'll eliminate a good bit of oil consumption - and clean off the valves and head well. Clean off the piston tops too. And make sure to clean off the valve stems, not just the faces. Time to get 20 years of crud out of your motor! _________________ Vaughan Scott

It's a shame I can't afford to do a cam and retainers at this point... Oh well, a basic port and polish will do for now
Something that concerns me though, I noticed a top end tick while I was mucking around under the hood, I'm suspecting a tappet. I don't suppose 931 tappets are interchangeable, are they? _________________ '81 931 in various states of assembly |

Excellent, maybe I'll send out the spare cam at the same time. This keeps getting better and better. _________________ '81 931 in various states of assembly |
