Has anyone ever owned/driven a car they prefer over the 924? I mean, that you'd really rather own, for whatever reason. And not so much "Man, I want a new Carrera GT" but something you've actually owned or at least have been fortunate enough to drive.
For example, I've driven an '85 911 Carrera with a 3.0L engine. Now, I've worshipped 911's since I was eight years old. I still love 'em. But this one, despite being in mint condition, destroyed the illusion...
Sure, it was hellishly fast and agile. But, mate, driving it was LITERALLY like driving a '60's VW Beetle fitted with warp drive! It was atrocious! The windscreen stuck straight up in front of my face, my shoulder/elbow was crushed against the driver's door, the (floor-hinged?!) pedals were serverely offset and so was the steering wheel, so I was contorted in the driver's seat. In comparison, the 924's like sitting in a (very comfortable) jet-fighter!
The 911 had the performance to see off my car but to be honest, in terms of driving comfort, I'd take the 924 anytime. Of course, I'd prefer a 944 Turbo or a 928 but I haven't been lucky enough to drive one yet... _________________ '80 924 Turbo |

| I owned a TR-6 that I wish I could've kept but it was literally rusting out from under me. I've always wanted to find another in better condition because that was truly the best ride I've ever had. The power and handling were just right for me and the fit was perfect. At least, that's how I remember it. Could be the years have fogged my memory but if I could afford to buy a good example of one I'd be all over it in a heart beat. Unfortunately, good examples are hard to come by and usually out of my price range when found. |

1988 944. Everything like a 924, except smoother, faster, and with a power sunroof! _________________ 1979 Porsche 924 "S"

I really love my 924, even being the money pit that it is, I have never owned another sport car because I hadnīt the money to do it.
I had only french commuting machines (renault and peugeot)
I hope some day to be able to buy a very good 944 turbo, or S2, that will be my dream fullfilled.
Once while in holidays in New Zealand I rented a BMW Z3 for 3 days and it was a wonderful experience.
Here in Argentina the Z3 are way to expensive for me... _________________ Euro 924 1980 N/A

I do love my wife's WRX... all the good stuff from my 924 - boost, balance, and hauls even more junk than the hatchback (she has the wagon body style), but with the addition of an awesome AWD system, an intercooler, good Bosch ABS, and even airbags! Plus it comes in this really cool blue colour, and she loves it - which keeps her from trying to finagle the keys to my turbo!
The 6-disc CD changer is very nice too, and I added a seat warmer (from Griot's Garage - expensive, but very nice!) to keep her happy.
The only thing I don't like about it is the (base) brakes - not up to heavy use, they're a little small for the car. I'd go for the STI, but then, that only comes in the sedan, which won't haul nearly as much as the wagon.
Her little car, it hauls A$$, and doesn't even have to make two trips! _________________ Vaughan Scott

Well I have an addiction. I love them all.
I am not sure I would go for a 911 that was not 1989 or newer. Qualify that with it has to be the 964 chassis.
My Father had a 1989 Carrera 4 and man... it just did everything right. It was like the car was an extension of me. Kind of like my 924 is. I can not imagine what the 993 and subsequent 996 C4s are like.
I also drove a 1986 928S that felt like my 924 but with all the power I have ever wanted.... that is what I recall saying when I drove it.
Have driven a 928S4 but it was an automatic and was not impressed. Driven 911 turbo 1988.... was modified with larger turbo. Tremendous power but little control.
I have had the pleasure of driving 944 turbos, 944S2 and Ferrari 328GTS, Corvette, Audi S4, on and on.
Ok back to what I want. One of each
and.... I would never give up my 1982 924.
List I want
924 Turbo S package
944 Turbo S
928 GTS
968 Turbo S
911 Turbo 3.6
911 Twin Turbo 993 Chassis
on on and on. _________________ 1982 924

I owned an '86 951 and I'd have to give it better marks than my 931 in most aspects. It's "downside" to me was that it really felt like a heavier car. The power steering feedback took a lot of the feel out of driving. But, boy did it move! I'd trade back if I could...
Owned a '69 TR6 too. What a fun car. Too long ago to really compare it to the 931. Sure liked the straight-six power, the sound of the roadster and the ragtop, but I must have replaced those rear-end U-joints four or five times in the 10 years it was in the family. _________________ '79 Eurospec 931 |

| for the money I think there is no other car I would want. If added another 5-10K on to my budget I would love an older 928 or 911. |

Well ... I had a 1986 Celica GTS that was hands down the best performing car I have owned as far as speed, cornering, comfort and control go. No comparison to the regular celicas. My 63 Vette will out run either the celica or the 924S but it is a bit cumbersome to drive. I had a 69 MGB in Germany that was a real kick in the pants but not as fast or nimble as the Celica or the 924S. The best thing about the MGB was I was young and the roads in Germany were made for it (this was 72/73)
The 68 Lotus Europa was a kick but not much of a car really. The triumph TR7 was junk. Really expected more after the Tr6 The 69 camaro was a great compromise between a family sedan and a sports car
I'll shut up now. _________________ Glenn Neff

The '86 GTS was the first year for FWD... My buddy has one, and I am not impressed with teh handling.
Hmmm, for pure performance I would take a 914/6 conversion with a 3.6, serious diet, around 1500lbs/300hp. It's in the works
For pure utility, a current or last generation Passat TDI wagon... I love those cars.
For when there is two feet of snow out and it's -50 celsius, I'd take a Mercedes Benz G500, thank you very much.
For a daily driver that's good on gas, provides plenty of cargo room, has incredible handling, and as much power as I need for tooling around town and hammering it out on the back roads, you can't beat a 924. _________________ '81 931 in various states of assembly |

Yeah CBass, I'm surprised the Celica gets a mention. Aussies call them "Silly-cars". Also called "hairdressers cars", for obvious reasons. No offence Sleykin, that's just what people call 'em. A good mate of mine had one and he liked it. They did have a GT4 version of the Celica here, which was a turbocharged 4WD based on the rally car. That was early '90's, I think. It was supposedly pretty awesome but I've only ever seen one, and obviously have never driven one.
So, the TR6 gets several good reviews. Cool. I thought the first 6-series BMW's might get a mention. An M-version has always been on my wish list. _________________ '80 924 Turbo |

I know you are going to think this is crazy but I had a '72 Mercury Capri, V6 that I really loved. It would do 130mph, was light and agile and at 2.6 ltr would break the tires loose in 3rd gear. I don't think I liked it more than the 924 but it was a fun car. The engine was german. _________________ '84 944
