Hi!

I'm going to repair the brakes on my 924 and found a small question:
The rear brake drums are self adjusting. How do the differ in parts from the normal brake drums?

I don't want to buy a set of rear drums and brake shoes and find out that they don't fit my car...

Regards
Magnus

the rear drum brakes in the 4 bolt cars are NOT self adjusting, they require adjustments about every 2000 miles, is is a normal drum setup, should only need new shoes and maybe have the drums turned.

Magnus, do your self a major favor and buy new springs and hardware in a 6 dollar kit. Lizard is correct the rear brakes are adjusted manually. It's very easy though. I saved some money and bought VW wheel cylinders (from a beetle I think).

I was looking for this kit a while back.
The lowest price I found was $26.00
Do you have a link?

*thinking...* The reason that I started thinking about this was that the Haynes manual and my swedish registration slip is talking about "self adjusting rear brakes".

Anyway, I'll find out when I remove the wheels and brake drum...

Thanks anyway!

You'll need a big strong extension bar to budge those hub-nuts mind mate... first time i tried to get mine off i had to use a length of scafold pipe on the socket T-Bar and hang on the thing until they moved... been no problem since then though.

There's no auto-adjusting mechanism on my rears as far as I recall, there is an adjuster each side at the bottom which you'll need to manually turn to adjust the shoes.... other than that it's a simple set-up - a solid bar that fits between the shoes at the top, single spring at the top and another at the bottom, pin through each shoe from the backplate with springs and slotted washer to hold in place...

I use Eurocaparts.com for my parts, they have a place near where i work so i don't need to fork out on shipping, think a rear brake cylinder cost a whopping £3 last time i needed one and shoes were about £10 for a full set... Dunno if they ship outside of the UK, but I'd imagine there'll be a similar supplier over in Sweden...

Augidog, yes I think I can help. I got my kit from NAPA, the part number is 084-0447 very cheap too.I think this kit is pretty common.

Found out some more info about the rear brakes... This "self adjusting" thingy is a local (only Sweden?) requirement... But the parts needed (brake shoe and possibly brake drum) are the same as the standard brakes.

Thanks for you answers anyway!

Self adjusting brakes usually include a small cable, extra spring and ratchet mechanism, so the hardware kit (springs, clips, etc) might be different for your car or the self adjustment parts might come as a seperate kit. In any case, it's a good idea to replace those little parts unless you know they were already replaced recently.

OK, thanks, Smoothie. I'll tear them apart and have a look first. The car is on jack stands for the rest of the winter anyway.

Still got lots of work on the body to do, my friends helped me replace most of the floor due to serious rust damage...
