Hi: The subject car is a 1987 924S. Has a loud whine coming from rear, only when driving. My "shade tree" mechanics (3) have given the following opinions: 1 - the drive shaft. 2 - the tranny, 3 - the power steering unit. Finally, we jacked up the rear of the car & the whine appears to be coming from the tranny. However the tranny shifts fine (no clunking, slippage, etc.). What are we missing here? Tranny fluid level seems OK. Also, just bought a 1978 924 which runs real well & has low miles. Just added a picture of it on my web site at www.jaxrepo.com. It needs sone interior & exterior TLC. Probably buying another tonight, which will make 10. Have loads of parts available. Thanks in advance for any suggestions you may have. Dick Price.[/list]

do an oil change on the tranny and use dino oil, not synthetic,

this is something that is normal it is a bearing that is on its way out, but the chance of it failing is slim

Hi Lizard: Thanks for the advice. I will have my mechanic try this tomorrow. By the way, I just bought number 10 on ebay, a 1979 924 that sounds pretty good ... but dont they all. I do not know when all of this will end, but I just love these cars & cannot stop buying them. Can you imagine the fun I am having, at age 70, with absolutely no mechanical ability ... I can change a battery though. Will add some pictures of my new addition on my web site when it arrives. Again, many thanks. Dick Price.
