Well so much for work increasing my hours we have been realy slow and I got off early so I pulled the dash from the 24. I'm going to put the one from the 44 in to check fit before sending it off to be repaired. Also I'm trying to figure out what all parts I'm going to send with it to be repaired. I would like to do all the interoir trim now but I think it'll be to expensive. I figured it's not going to be running for awhile I might as well get the dash done now so I don't have to take it down again the rest of the interior I can do peice by peice rather easily.
I found out the radio wiring is a mess so I'll have to fix it before I reinstall the dash. If I get off early tomorrow I'll likely fix the wiring and try the 44 dash for proper fit.
Now I'm really surprised at how easy the dash comes out with the 44 I thought mabey it was that easy since some of the stuff was already done. _________________ 80 924

Yes, it's an excellent time to clean up and repair the wiring as needed - also a very easy access to the fuseboxes, if any corrosion, etc., needs fixing.
I'd also recommend you consider cleaning out the "R2D2" heater unit, since you can only access it after removing the dash. The insides often get dusty/dirty, and you can check for leaking from the heater core (common after this long a time in the car). You can also use new foam tape from Home Depot etc. to re-seal all the ducting for optimal efficiency. _________________ Vaughan Scott

I agree with Vaughn, you'll be happy to have a clean heating system. If your wiring is really a mess you might want to consider find another harness for you car as well. Sometime easier to replace than to repair. Becareful when buying a harness though not all years are the same. And patch work sucks. I have rewired several of these cars. ANd it isn't too bad. Easpecially in the early cars. I am doping a complete rewire job in my car right now started putting it back in last night. And i am so happy I am doing the harness I have is like new. compared to the old one which had alot of patch work, that was terribly done.
Also a good time to mreseal the under dash trays or seal them if they are not done. These seams are a good spot for moisture to enter the car. I am triing spray on bed liner and sound prooffing to accomplish this in my car. I'll let you know the results in a couple of weeks when I finally roll the car back out of my shop after 2 months.
By the way this car got a complete tear down. Nothing was left attached. Everything fixed, replaced, upgraded, painted, and customized! _________________ Life is to short to be looking for something? |

no no no, it would be to smart to fix the wiring while the dash is out providing easy access, you want to put the dash in and then find out you have a new wiring problem, only to find out it was a plug you had forgot to plug in and it is behind a mount for the dash meaning you have to pull the entire thing again, this is how you have fun with cars, you cant do it logically _________________ 3 928s, |

If I could get the color coded wire I'd rewire the entire car. It's just the wiring for the radio and a few scotch locks on the ignition switch wiring nothing to bad I've had to splice 50 wires together before on a new harness the only other option was to take the entire interior of a caravan out for warrenty pay and my boss didn't like that idea since he was flat rate and would only get paid 4 or 5 hours for 2-3 days of work.
What all I do will depend on how much time I have. Work has been real slow we just about closed the shop at noon friday I think 3 techs stayed out of 25. There is so little work they are having us fix shop tools, now if they would only let me fill the lube pit in with concrete I'd be happy. If I keep getting off early I will likely completely strip the interior then when I can afford it start going back together piece by piece.
I start back to school tomorrow I'll have a few hours on tuesdays if I can stay awake to work on it but that's it unless I get off early. I'm hoping to have it done before we get into the triple digit temps. _________________ 80 924

I got a quote to repair the dash $800 for black $850 for any other color. It's a little more expensive that I was hoping so I'm going to put it off until after it is painted. I'm trying to decide if I want to buy a new dash or get this one repaired since it's not much more for new but the repair suppousedly wont crack like the original. _________________ 80 924

Kaffine, if you get it repaired get at least a 2 year warranty or get a new 1, I know someone with a 931 who had the dash refurbished and said it wouldnt crack, the car sat under a lean to for a year after it had been done, it was closed up tight and it recracked, _________________ 3 928s, |
