|
|
Just wanted to drop a note to update the progress. I was hoping to finish the 931 up and get it broken in for New Year's, but...
Of all the things that could happen- I was sitting on top of the motor bolting on the injection parts on the back of the engine. And disaster, I dropped a bolt into the tiny flywheel timing hole. A one in a million shot. Ahh! I crossed my fingers, but after I finished bolting the ancillaries on and cranking the starter I had an oil slick under the car coming from the bellhousing. My only guess is that the bolt got caught between the flywheel and the rear main seal and tore up the seal when I hit the starter. There really isn't anything else back there where oil can pour out. I was hoping the bolt would just fling itself out and I could drop the starter and grab it. Of course not!
So I'm going to pull the motor back out, but all is not lost since the oil pressure sender thread got cross threaded in the head. It seemed to hold tight, but now I'll be able to retap and helicoil the hole with the motor out. I still can't figure out how I managed to cross thread those threads.
Other than that, the car is looking great. With a little work, the 944 heater box has mounted up nice and solid. The tranmission has a nice feel while shifting through the gears with the motor off. I bought a reliaboost II from boostsciences.com. I'm looking forward to installing this little gadget.
So I get to spend this weekend pulling everything back apart. I'll check to ensure the rear main is the oil leak culprit and order up the parts this week. Barring any new catastrophes, I hope to get this thing out for a drive after next weekend. I'll be stuffing a rag in the bellhousing hole this time...
I'll get some updated pics on cardomain when I get this thing back together.

Oh, maannn.....!!
? Maybe it's the oil pan gasket, and has nothing to do with the dropped bolt. ? But, your horror story will stick with me, and I'll be sure and plug that hole when time comes during my reassembly. _________________ '79 Eurospec 931 |

ouch, I highly doubt though that it is the rear main seal that got buggered.
I wish you luck though none the less _________________ 3 928s, |

It's definately coming from the bellhousing, not above or below. And the only oil exit point is the rear main or through the cast iron of the block. I'm pretty confident, but all the same, I'm not going to order a new rear main before I open it up!

Are you a golfer. You just made a one in a million put.
I had the flywheel tear up part of the rubber pan gasket
cause it was off center when the pan was put on. Oh
yea I had a nice oil leak for awhile. _________________ 1979 porsche 924 Na

Ah, I forgot the back of the oil pan seals up behind the bellhousing too. Well, we'll see what it looks like in a couple days...

Well, keep us posted, because I have an oil leak at the back of the bellhowsing also, which I assume is the rear main seal. I will be going in in a few weeks to replace it. If your leak is not the seal, let me know.
Also, I have three new rear main seals, one white rubber, and two black rubber. Anybody know if one is better than the other?
Nick, if it is the seal, I can send you one for free. But, I will be on a cruise for the next week, so I won't be available to post it. _________________ 1980 924 Turbo |

If you had your block done at a machine shop they may have removed the plug in the oil gallery. There is one front and back. The rear one is below the frost plug. If the oil poured out quickly this may be your problem. _________________ 1980 924 turbo |
