I noticed a slight increase in oil consumption lately and some "smoking". I am wondering what is a reasonable cost estimate for a bottom end overhaul since I had the head reworked last year due to stupidity. The front of engine service is fresh at that time. Parts? Labor? Also, when doing this job is it possible to Tweek the performance with higher compression pistons w/o more head work? Any help!!! (1987 924S 2.5L). What other work is warranted while tearing down? _________________ Dream as if you'll live forever.

time to verify that your crank case breather just isnt clogged and creating to much crankcase pressure,
before you consider a teardown do a compression test on all cyl, if low then pull and replace rings and lower bearings, while at it have the crank shipped off and have the crank crossdrilled to help prevent the #2 bearing failure, you will need to replace the headgasket and you will have to take the head off to complete this procedure _________________ 3 928s, |

Sounds logical...where do I find the breather? _________________ Dream as if you'll live forever.

good question on the 924S, umm I would recommend checking renlist, but it is either going to be a hose coming off the block, or a hose coming off the valve cover, but I am not sure, _________________ 3 928s, |

The 924S already has fairly high compression, around the 10:1 range. You could increase this, but you won't see much gain, certainly not for the money you'll spend on it.
Your money would probably be best spent on a cam and some valvetrain components if you want a little more power. Headwork and a header wouldn't hurt either. _________________ '81 931 in various states of assembly |

cbass the 924S 86/87 had a detuned engine, they may have bumped the compression down _________________ 3 928s, |

The 924S has 10.2:1 compression, IIRC, plenty enough for a 250/240 degree cam. _________________ '81 931 in various states of assembly |
