Most certainly sounds like the relay to me.
But if not try swapping out the switch.
I assume you have a 1982.5-1985 924 or a 924S? _________________ 1982 924

I have not been around for awhile so I am not up to speed on your car, but here is a thought. Most cars have a resistor pack that controls the blower moter speed. Its usually just a series of coiled wires each with a different diameter. There may also be a diode depending how the coiled wires are set up. Full speed on the blower motor bypasses these resistors and the diode since full power is needed for the high setting. Try locating the resistor pack and see if the wires are melted or the diode is blown. My 81 924 doesn't have a diode and the resistor pack is located in the dash board attached to the fan speed switch. On other cars it is sometimes located close to the blower. The blower helps cool the resistor pack since they can get very hot. Usually the relay only supplies power it does not regulate fan speed. _________________ 1981 924 NA

maybe the fans bearings aren't smooth and it takes full whack to get it to start turning at all? mine was pretty gunked up (so it wouldn't even move at all) and i've heard it's a common problem.
if the fan will run at slower speeds by giving it full power and then backing it off slowly then that's probably it. _________________ it's funny, but when they said "Anything is Possible", that's exactly what they meant.... |

Roger is correct. Look directly behind the controls for the resister-pack regardless of which control variation you have (There are 2 styles off the top of my head - but each is in the same locatio) _________________ John

I had a similar set up on my 1989 Ford probe but did not know it was like that on the 924. I do not recall seeing one on my 1983 944... but then again... was never looking for it either _________________ 1982 924

I appear to be having the same problem. only the last selector on the blower switch works. _________________ 1982 Porsche nine two four with Carrera GT conversion - people think i'm slow cos it's an X plate!!

The 83 944 and VERY late 924s had a rotary switch which seleced fan speed. But it provided the same function as the earlier slide switch; it selected sections of heavy resistor wire. And the resistor is still in roughly the same location behind that panel. _________________ John

Mine runs all the time. Hit a bump and it may go off or speed up. I think it is haunted.
