This weekend I was given a Porsche. I think that I should be happy that I have a friend who would give me a Porsche. My plan is to perhaps one day race this car. However, I know that I need to 1st decide if I REALLY want to race, so my immediate plans are to get the car safe for the road. Then sign up for some HPDE 1 events in the NASA Southeast Region (I'm a member and have attended one event as a worker - Roebling Road)
So now let me get to describing the car. According to my 'friend' it's a 1980 Porsche 924. The car has been prepped for the paint booth. The head was warped (overheated), so the former owner had it fixed. Also, the fuel injection was removed and replace with Dell Orto DHLA 40 carbs. It has 5 bolt 15 inch 'spider' wheels. The VIN is *92A0431216* and the numbers on the block are 060 103 373 B, numbers on the valve cover are 047 103 475.
The car will turn over and attempt to run, but REAL rough. My friend said that he had trouble keeping the timing set and never quiet got the carbs tuned correctly.
Now I have 2 questions;
1. Can anyone tell me what I REALLY have?
2. Is it feasible to get this car 'road worthy' and then perhaps make a fun car to race?
Sorry for being so long winded, but I've got a lot on my mind with the new toy. |

Yeah. It's an early 924. I placed info somewhere on the main section of this 924.org site that will decode exactly the year. But it was long ago and so you'll have to search if you really care.
It may have come with the (optional) 5 'bolt' (lug) wheels ( the M471 option) or someone may have added them later. In any case, that means you have 944 or 924S wheels and brakes (discs at all 4 corners).
The motor clearly has been modified so you're on your own there. The carb conversion is the main way to really mod the engine to make some power.
Suggest you spend some time browsing the main site for tech info that may help learn the car.
Things that will help us help you: what transmission is in the car? 4 or 5 sp? Shift pattern? Are the suspension arms steel or alloy? _________________ John

Yeah, that should be a 1980... according to the VIN decoder (http://www.924board.org/register/vindec.html) it is indeed a US-model 924.
Welcome to 924.org and 924board.org!
There are a number here who should be able to help you sort out the carbs - though they're not stock, a number are running carb conversions. General Tech section would be a place to look/ask, as well as Performance...
Your primary motivations for getting the car on track will be to get it reliable as nothing sucks worse than paying for all that time then not getting to use it!
Anyway, you're in the right place... once you've got the bugs worked out and can get some seat time in the car (both on the road and the track), we can work out how you may wish to modify things to make it faster on-track... _________________ Vaughan Scott

John,
I forgot to mention that the car is a 5 spd with a 'H' type pattern. |

Another thing to keep in mind with that particular year car is that with the 944 brakes you'll have a lot better stopping power than over the drum set up found on other 924's. The 944 brakes are awesome on our lighter 924's We've gone just about 4 races this season and our stock 944 brake pads look great. Once we figurered out our corner weights we stopped locking up the brakes ( well I did, Dad seems to keep locking them up occassionally). The brakes are awesome. We can go much deeper than Spec Miata and RX-7's in corners because our brakes are much better.
The 924 also handles much better in the rain. At Pocono last year both myself and my father were able to pass much faster vettes and camaros in the infield section of the course because the car is so equally balanced.
Despite what you read hear about F.L.A.G.'s races, the cars are pretty much reliable if you keep up after it. Remember your car is over 20 years old and stuff breaks when you least expect it. We were at Watkins Glen last month and discovered that the radiator overflow tank had developed a small crack that we could not easily see. We never saw that coming. That was a costly mistake.
I love the car, it's a blast to drive. Welcome to the site. Please fee free to PM me and ASK QUESTIONS! _________________ Jeremy "I'm Faster than My Dad" Jadczak
