Someone wants to buy my beautiful euro 924 1980 and I have a beautiful guards red EEUU 1988 951 in view for about twice the amount of money
Do you think that a 951 deserves spending twice the money???? _________________ Euro 924 1980 N/A

The 951 is a piece of junk. It's not a real Porsche, it's just a bastardized VW. _________________ 1987 951 - M193 Version for Japan |

Yes, more expensive to keep also ....(I presume)
I desire the 951 a lot , is the day to day expense what I'm afraid of _________________ Euro 924 1980 N/A

If you can get a decent 88 951 for only twice the value of the 924. I would definitely do it. Like stated earlier more of everything!! _________________ 88 951 stone gray

The question is not is the 951 worth more money...
The question you need to answer is: Do you honestly have $1500-$2000 a year that you can put away for the "front of engine" service, and the other incidental repairs that a 951 requires?
If not, then you are better off staying with a Series 1 924 (76-85). |

My two cents... Unlike some of the other more "enthusiastic" members of this board, I believe that the 944, 928, 968 and yes, even the 911 and Boxster are indeed better cars, in any measure of performance, than any iteration of the 924.
The only exception might be the 924S vs. the first series of the 944, because I really do prefer the shape of the 924 over the 944. And the 924S basically has everything the first series 944 has, in a better looking body.
There's no doubt that a good condition '88 944 Turbo is far superior to any version of the 924.
Is it worth twice the price of a good condition (even perfect) '80 924? Probably that and more (at least in Oz). I'd say you're getting a bargain.
gohim raises a valid point; can you afford the extra maintenance? If yes, then buy the '88 944 Turbo. You won't regret it, I'm sure

Front of Engine service every year?
- If you're going to do some high mileage then it could get expensive, but don't the belts need changing every 45K?, water pump even longer?
The 951 is in another performance league, & if it's been well looked after, shouldn't cost you loads of money to maintain/fix.
Just make sure you get it checked out by someone who knows them inside out. _________________ current - '90 944S2, '00 986S,

I tried a 951 once. It was in nice shape, 20k kms since an engine overhaul... I would have bought it, if I hadn't stubled on one tiny detail... Not the cost of the car, not the cost of maintenance, but the cost of insurance.
Check what insurance will cost you first... It will probably be double of what you are paying for the 924, and double that again if you want to have insurance that will cover damage that you were responsible for, or damage done by an unknown third party.
For me, that worked out to insuarance costs of about 25 cent for each kilometer driven! And yes, I did check what other people with Porsches were using. |

I have a '87 951 and a '84 924.
The 951 is a superior car, but way more expensive to drive. The fuel consumption is enormous in comparison to the 924.
If you are going to use the car as a dailey driver, I would stick to the 924. _________________ Porsche 944 turbo '87 - maranchino red

I have my 924 for 1 year now and I made 3000 kms with it in this year
I mostly use it on weekends and in classic cars events
The insurance for the 951 is a little higher but not that much
Anyway to make ends meet the buyer of my 924 has to agree on my price and the seller of the 951 has to make his price 10% lower
I think it could work out because the 951 is for sale since january - every one wants a 911 here - and my car is one of the best 924 you can buy in Argentina _________________ Euro 924 1980 N/A

edh,
The "front of engine " service on a 951 costs more, because there is more work involved to replace the parts on the front of the engine, than there would be on a normally aspired 944 or 924S.
The 951 costs more to maintain than a 924S or 944, because there are expensive parts under the hood not used on the 924S/944, that need replacement occasionally.
The dollar range that I quoted for annual maintenance cost (you can read lots of statements from 951 owners on the RennList Website, approximating this annual cost level) includes 1/3 of the cost of a "front of engine" service, and some money to cover some of the other incidental repairs that are needed every year. |

I have both an '88 951 and an '82 931. I love them both. The 931 is more lithe. It has an entirely different feel. My 931 is lighter by virtue of having removed the AC, radio, carpet padding, rear seatback, and replaced both seats with OMP fiberglass seats. Even before removing the extra weight the 931 has a much lighter feel. That plus the sound of the turbo spooling is addictive.
The 951 feels heavier and it is but the handling is rock solid on good tires and it's fast-- really fast. It also stops fast. The accelleration of the 951 feels like you're on the end of a stretched out bungee that's really long and stretched out really tight. I usually run out of road or nerve before the accelleration does!!
The only car I'd trade the 951 for is a nice M3. (They really kick ass! They're faster and more practical.)
As for insurance, if you're an adult with a good record you can get a stated (or agreed value) policy from a collector car insurance company. My insurance has been really cheap for the last 4 or 5 years. I can only put 5000 miles a year on the 951 and 3500 on the 931 but that's no problem as I don't drive either much when it gets cold. They are definately not snow cars. _________________ 1988 951

That would be a hoot!
To get full value from my car I won't go with a limited insurace co. Unless they can cut my rates by 50%. I would hate to garage it, due to "too many kms". |
