Got my engine to finally turn over. have a couple of hopefully quick ones here...
1 ) what direction does the engine normaly rotate ie cw or ccw??
2 ) have recently gotten smoke or steam coming out of cis intake??? any ideas here???
3 ) should gas pump run all of the time or should it cut out once pressure is reached??
thanks in advance

The engine should turn CW when you are looking at it from the from. Smoke from the intake normally means the ignition timing is too advanced or the cam timing is off. The fuel pump should run all the time while the engine is running. When cranking the engine it should shut off after a few seconds if the engine doesn't start.

The only way a 931 will crank backword is if you install an NA starter instead of 931/944 starter. Don't ask me how I know. _________________ 1980 924 Turbo |

Since I believe you have a 80 931, I would check the timing belt and make sure it's not loose. If you don't know when it was replaced last, replace it along with the tensioner.
The oil pump doesn't work when the motor is cranked backwards, but unless you have been cranking it a lot, I doubt you hurt anything. |

if your timing belt skipped teeth then you may have bent your valves. _________________ 3 928s, |

Cranking it backwards will not damage the 931, it just won't start. _________________ 1980 924 Turbo |

| But cranking it backwards especially if its loose may cause the belt to slip. |

well, I replaced the starter with the correct type. Fired it up.. and supprise... it acutally started... just about 50 deg advance... oops.
retimed it and it runs a little high on the rpm about 2000 or there abouts.
I've got the charger on the bat tonight. and will put a full tank of good gas in on friday morning.
other than that, she is a little hard to start right now, thinking because its the bad/old gas.
when you set the timing, where in the window is it set?? top, mid, or bottom?
thanks again. |

You should find a recess and/or mark just below the middle of the window to line-up with. _________________ "..it's made in Germany. You know the Germans always make good stuff."
