|
|
I'm looking for a high quality pair of 4x6 for my front door that will fit in the stock opening (w/power windows) of my 88 924S.
Those that switched out their factory 4x6s, what brand did you guys get and how do they sound? |

| I got 2 sets of alpine SPS-460A speakers for my car. That plus a new Alpine deck... and I'm going to add a Bazooka powered 8 or 10" sub in the back so I don't lose all my cargo room. Should sound nice. |

I like the Blaupunkt Overdrive series myself. 3-Way 4x6's sound very crisp. Not to mention keeping it OEM is always good. Had these speakers all around (doors, rear, and dash), Volfenhaag 12' subs, Vofenhaag 1000 watt amp, and Blaupunkt head unit. The overdrives might be hard to come by now, but if you can find them, they are nice, and they look pretty cool too. _________________ MJ

I installed these last week to replace the factory rears.
I'd tell you how they sound, but I don't have a receiver yet, ordered my
Blaupunkt stereo yesterday. I'm getting everything through Crutchfield and trying to keep everything Blaupunkt since that was the original manufacturer of all the stereo components. |

I must admit Bluapunkts quality is AWSOME, however if you want the BEST sound hands down, you will want to go with round speakers that are only 1 way, and get external tweeters. _________________ 3 928s, |

I like my Blaupunkt head unit better than most I have heard, and I got mine for $100 before they stopped selling it, I think they started cracking down on people selling their radios online w/o permission or something. _________________ 1987 924S Guards Red

I just finished putting in a pair of Sony Xplod speakers (4x6), took me less than an hour for both! of course I have little hands and I found that a screw bit I have fits in a 1/4" socket wrench, but it didn't seem to terribly hard, It's not perfect, you can tell I was there if you look at it , but it won't draw any attention. It was definatly time to change, the cones had almost completely detacted from the outer frame! Only cost me $40 for the pair at Walmart _________________ 1987 924S Guards Red

Well, since I only listen to talk radio, the factory speakers are fine. _________________ 1980 924 Turbo |

I installed a pair of these 3-way Pioneers this weekend. A vast improvement over the 25-yr-old originals. A perfect screw-in replacement - holes lined up exactly, no funky adapter plate necessary. Well worth the $44 + S&H ($90 suggested retail)

I got a pair of the clarion 4x6"s (the more expensive ones with the silk dome tweeters) for AU$149 and they're pretty decent sounding. a lot of thump for such a small speaker, and quite a nice sound.
i've nothing to compare them to, but i'm happy with them.. _________________ it's funny, but when they said "Anything is Possible", that's exactly what they meant.... |

Does anyone know where to put a small subwoofer without a stupid box sitting in the back? I was thinking about a small one sitting on the spare tire and an amp in the side holes. _________________ 1987 924S Guards Red

you could always put in a small one in a rear footwell if you've got enough room.. you can use Sonotube to make the tube (it's a thick cardboard tube, designed for casting concrete, but good for speaker boxes too) and just put wood and a sub driver in one end (or both ends). simple construction and reasonably compact.
remember that when you're making subs, it's the volume of the box not the shape of the box that's important, so you can squish them into odd places if you build the box right! _________________ it's funny, but when they said "Anything is Possible", that's exactly what they meant.... |

Okay but where do you buy just one 4X6 for the center dash speaker? _________________ 82 924 Turbo

I just picked up a set of INFINITY 6402CFP reference 4x6's off of ebay (pic for reference) for the rear quarter spaces, still waiitng for them to come in. ill post when i get them and give them a listen.
Im also changing my front doors (both) mainly bacause i was hit in one and its easier/cheaper to swap doors than have the dents pulled, but secondly (and why im switching both) is for the speaker provisions in the later model doors. im adding the gt kit shortly, and the whole car will need paint, so its not going to cost me anymore except in prep time. id rather have four 4x6's than two...
ive got a kenwood 4x6 in the center channel, it was one of a set (the other one blew) so i saved it when i replaced them last time in my 78. im going to end up with a seven speaker system (1 center, 2 door, 2 quarter, and a set of 6x9 boxes in the hatch) . it still wont be audiophile quality, but it should be pretty decent at least.. _________________ Eric

got the infinity speakers in today, im happy with them. they sound better than the kenwood 4x6's if used in the past. theyre a very tight fit, for those whove used the "flex and sneak" method of quarter speaker installation, that wont work with these, the interior 1/4 panel trim must be removed to seat these speakers properly. id recommend removing the 1/4 windows as well, its a fairly easy process and makes the whole job much easier...
